Kelly didnât know what to do with her hands, alternately wringing them then gripping them tight to stop the nervous movement.
Alone with Bear.
A few times over the last six months, sheâd given herself this pep talk: Heâs not for you, but you can be friends. So, about a month after heâd driven her home, sheâd worked on drawing him into conversation, trying to get things between them back onto a normal footing.
She soon realized these conversations only left her in an agony of wanting, so sheâd stopped initiating them. The one time heâd done so, about a week later, sheâd shut him down. He let her have her way, and these days, they closed out a shift in tense, desire-filled silence.
Kelly looked up when she sensed movement.
Bear came forward then squatted in front of her. His thighs strained his denim jeans and cradled his forearms, hands dangling between.
He didnât look at her. His head hung low.
âIâm sorry.â His voice was tortured.
It caught her off guard. âSorry for what?â she breathed, alarmed.
âThat I didnât stop it sooner.â
Heart catching, Kelly reached out without thinking and wound a hand in the silky malt hair that brushed the collar of his plaid shirt.
âTen seconds,â she said.
âWhat?â
She tugged on his hair, raising his gaze. She almost faltered at the burning whiskey eyes that met her own.
âFrom the moment they first touched me until you came . . . it was ten seconds. Which means you were coming for me before you were truly certain something was wrong.
âIn fact,â she said, one side of her lips twisting wryly, âthey have to be the stupidest hyena pack in the world to think they could touch me in your bar.â
âAnywhere.â
âWhat?â The word was a thready whisper.
âThey donât get to touch you anywhere,â he growled, enunciating each word.
âBear,â she said his name on a gentle protest. âItâs not your job to protect me. Not outside this bar.â Please, please make it your job. âYouâre my boss and,â she gritted her teeth, because how could she refuse him now, âmy friend, but thatâs not logical.â
âShifters operate on instinct.â
âEven if logic makes more sense?â
âYes. Some things just are.â
âLike what?â she breathed.
They swayed closer.
Kellyâs nipples tingled, and she was sure, if he looked down, heâd see them pebbled under her torn white tee. But then Bear muttered something that sounded like asshole under his breath and pulled back, shaking his head as though trying to clear it.
The move pulled his silky hair from her grip.
She almost moaned in despair.
Her fingers missed those strands. She wondered if his fur would feel as soft. âWill you shift for me?â The words were out before she could think them through.
