Chapter Five

Dawn watched Tyler get up and walk to the center of the living room, and she stood, too. She wasn’t afraid, but he’d suggested she wait on the other side of the room in case she felt frightened in the face of his bear. The only reason she complied was because he’d insisted.

Instead of feeling fear, or apprehension, she felt wildly turned on. From their first meeting, she’d been attracted to his wild, almost primitive side that lingered just below the surface.

Of the three brothers, Tyler was known as the peacekeeper. The label suited him, to an extent, but in her eyes he was so much more. She couldn’t wait to watch him shift forms.

After dinner, he’d driven them to his home.

The spacious one story house had three bedrooms, two baths, a kitchen and a separate dining room, a family room and a covered deck. It also had a large, fenced in backyard, and an attached two car garage. The layout was beautiful, and after the tour, they sat down on the couch and she’d told him so.

“Tyler, your home is beautiful. You guys are really talented.”

“It will be your home, too, soon, and it could definitely use some redecorating. Where do you think we should start?” he asked.

“Well…,” she searched for the right words. She didn’t want to change everything about his home, or eliminate his presence and style, but there were a few places she thought could use a little color.

“You won’t hurt my feelings, princess. This is a man’s home. Once we’re married, I want it to be our home, filled with things we both like. We can blend some of your stuff with my stuff, or we can buy all new pieces and start fresh. Either way, I don’t want you to think of this as my house. It will be our home, the place where we raise our cubs, and I want you to be happy.”

He was right, and she wanted those things, too.

“The master bedroom? It could definitely use a facelift.”

“Agreed,” he said, and kissed her quickly on the lips. “Now, let’s talk about my bear.”

Though she’d seen two bears shift on the street, he explained what would happen in the thirty second transition, and gave her some insight into his state of mind. Basically, whether in his man or bear form, his thoughts, feelings and comprehension didn’t change. He would always be aware of his surroundings, and he could still understand the words of any human.

He’d also shared some interesting details, including the fact that though shifters were stronger than humans in both their forms, they had the same lifespan as humans and could be hurt, scarred or killed. That tidbit explained at least part of why Trent walked with the cane, the rest she’d have to ask him about later.

She also learned about his weakness. Silver was the only metal strong enough to hold a shifter. It didn’t cause damage to their skin, but they didn’t have the power to break through the common element.
