Donât Strike Out
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
JAMES 1:19-20 ESV
When the wandering Israelites ran out of water, they grumbled and quarreled and rose up against Moses and Aaron. Water was vitally important to them in the desert. The people were stressed. Aaron was anxious. And Moses was just plain exhausted from all the grumbling.
Godâs instructions to Moses were to âspeak to the rockâ and God would bring forth water. God planned a miracle, but Moses took matters into his own hands, or shall we say, staff.
Moses was stressed to the max with all the grumbling and complaining. He was worn out from all those responsibilities. Honestly, can you blame him? The Israelites were ungrateful, sinful, blinded-to-miracles troublemakers. Sort of sounds like a bunch of us God-followers today, right?
Moses didnât handle the stress well and chose disobedience. Moses struck the rock with his staff after losing his cool with the people and calling them rebels. And he took credit for the water that gushed from the rock too.
God, in his love and mercy, gave the Israelites a bubbling, gurgling rush of refreshing water to nourish the people and livestock. And he told Moses that he wouldnât see the promised land because of his disobedience.
Friends, life is hard. Others around us grumble, exasperating us. Our families whine and complain, causing stress and annoyance. The boss is angry. The salesclerk is rude. The car breaks down. And the rain ruins a vacation. Life is tough. But God is good. God is always good.
We canât allow the actions of others to affect our own. Just think of all the times other people squabbling has led us to the edge. To allow ourselves to get so stressed that we are disobedient to God robs us of the joy he promises. When we get so stressed that weâre tempted to sin, we can take a deep breath. Walk away for a second. Pray for a long time. Jump in a bubble bath. Be careful not to sin. God has way too many rebels. He could use some strong faith-filled followers.
