MACY AND PAX spent the rest of the weekend collecting old clothes they could redesign and experimenting with new looks. For Pax, Macy came up with an idea that felt so right, she insisted on taking over the design process.

“Just trust me,” she assured Pax, who hesitated, then handed over his sketch pad. Macy drew a stick figure wearing jeans before deciding she didn’t really need to sketch anything out. She knew what she wanted to create. She just needed materials.

Macy grabbed her phone and texted PJ, who said to meet her outside in ten minutes. Macy shot her dad a quick text. Then PJ, Macy, and Pax walked to the shopping mall, where they purchased four different colored fabric dyes from JOANN craft store. Then they went hunting for a very specific patch. After getting a few confused looks, one assistant manager suggested looking online for the patch.

“Darn it. I wanted to finish everything today.” Macy sucked her teeth. “Online orders take forever to arrive. Plus, I don’t even have a credit card.”

Macy felt a nudge. “Why don’t you let PJ take care of that part? I bet the patch will be sitting at your front door by the time you’re ready to sew on the finishing touches,” PJ said. Then she thanked the assistant manager for the suggestion and led Macy and Pax out of the store.

PJ was right. By the time Macy and Pax covered the kitchen floor with plastic grocery bags and successfully tie-dyed an old pair of Pax’s jeans, an Amazon delivery guy was knocking on the door.

While PJ went to the door to collect the package, Macy went to get a hanger from her bedroom closet. When she returned to the kitchen, she draped the pants across the hanger and hung the tie-dye jeans up on the window to dry. Pax stared at the newest piece in their collection.

“Wow. This was a great idea. Like, they’re black, but they’re giving off something extra. I like them.”

Macy shrugged. “Remember when you told me there’s more than one shade of Black? That gave me the idea for the jeans.”

Pax didn’t take his eyes off the jeans. “Well, they’re perfect. I can’t wait to try them on.”

When PJ returned to the kitchen with the patch, Macy finished up Pax’s look by stitching the Dominican Republic flag over the part of his black hoodie that covered his heart, to honor the country where his parents grew up.

The next day, House of Anomaly collaborated on a look for Macy. They spent all afternoon making sure each detail was perfect. Macy still wished her mom had shown, even for a few hours. But having something fun to do was a good distraction and helped dull the pain in her heart a little.
