Chapter 9
By the time she woke up the following morning, Melanie was feeling a great deal better. Her headache was beginning to subside, and her shoulder, which seemed to have taken the brunt of the collision, was less painful, thanks to the medication. The rest and the ice pack the day before had helped considerably, and she was actually feeling almost normal when she walked into the kitchen.
Liza joined her just as she was pouring herself a mug of coffee. Her grandmother had removed the tape across her nose to reveal a small cut and the beginnings of a bruise, but otherwise she seemed okay.
“I thought I smelled something invigorating,” Liza said as she eased herself down in the nook.
Melanie carried the two steaming mugs to the table.
“Cindi should be in soon. She said she’d come in early. We’ll need her help this morning.”
“She’s a good kid.” Liza peered anxiously at her. “How’s your head? Still have a headache?”
“It’s getting a lot better.” She sat down and smiled at her grandmother. “Don’t worry. I’m fine.”
“I hope so.” Liza leaned back on her chair.
Melanie studied her for a moment. Her grandmother looked a little pale but otherwise seemed okay. “Are you feeling up to doing breakfast this morning? I’m sure Cindi and I can manage if you need to rest.”
“I’m perfectly capable of managing my end of things.”
“Just do what you can. Cindi and I will take care of everything else.”
Liza picked up her coffee and sipped the hot liquid. “I saw the news last night. I couldn’t sleep, so I watched it on my tablet.”
“Did they mention our accident?”
“Nope. Guess it wasn’t that much of a sensation.”
“What about the murder?”
“Only that the police are still investigating. And the fact that Doug is still their main suspect. He must be out of his mind with worrying about that.”
Melanie was about to answer when the buzz of her cell phone caught her attention. Glancing at the screen, her pulse quickened. “It’s Ben,” she said, picking up the phone.
Liza looked smug. “Want me to give you some privacy?”
“No, of course not.” Melanie swiped the phone. “Hi!”
“Good morning! How’s my girl doing this morning?”
Ben’s voice sounded a little subdued, and for a second Melanie felt a quiver of apprehension, but then being called his girl swept all that away. “I’m feeling much better, thank you. My headache has almost gone.”
“Glad to hear it. Liza okay?”
“I think so.” Melanie smiled at her grandmother. “She says she is, anyway.”
“Good. And Max?”
Something was off. She could hear it in his voice. “Max is fine, too. Ben, what’s wrong?”
She could clearly hear his sigh. “The report came back from the auto shop. They can fix your car, but it’s going to take a few days. There’s some damage to the undercarriage and the front end. At least a week, they say.”
Somewhat relieved, she nevertheless groaned. “Really? That’s not good news.”
Liza leaned forward, her face creased in an anxious frown. “What? What’s wrong?”
“Ben says it’s going to take at least a week to get the car fixed.
