“Are you okay?” Abbie’s voice penetrates the cloud I’m in. My surroundings gradually come back into focus, and I realize I’m lying in the snow. I’m not in the car.

“Are you guys okay?” the snowboarder calls out. “I’m really sorry.”

“He’s not okay,” Abigail shouts back. “Call for help.”

“Oh shit. Really?” He approaches us, holding the board in his hand.

“Connor, where are you hurt?” Abigail’s face appears in front of mine, her green eyes wide, her cheeks flushed.

I try to respond, but my throat feels dry and scratchy.

“Connor?” she calls again.

“Is he conscious?” the boarder asks, sounding alarmed.

“I think so, but he’s not responding,” Abigail replies with growing concern in her voice.

“Shit. My parents will kill me if they hear about this. They’ll kill me.”

I’m on the ski slope. I’m not in the car.

The snowboarder towering above me looks like a kid, probably no more than seventeen. I attempt to move my right hand, and it responds to my command, followed by my left. I let out a sigh of relief.

“Shit, Connor, say something,” Abigail murmurs. “Come back to me. I’m scared.”

“I’m fine. I think,” I say, pushing myself to a sitting position. I glance down and observe that my body appears intact, and all my limbs are still connected.

I search the area for my skis, spotting one of them nearby and the other one protruding from the snow a little further. My knee throbs with pain, but I push myself up and begin trudging through the snow to retrieve my skis. I approach the half-buried ski and lift it, only to discover it’s broken into pieces.

“Holy shit.” The guy says at the sight of the broken ski, “I’m sorry. I’ll pay for it.”

As if I care about the money.

“How do we get out of here?” Abigail’s pale face and blue lips show how cold she is.

“I can go down and call for help,” the guy offers, but looking at Abbie, I know we can’t wait in the freezing cold.

I stand, ignoring the sharp pain in my knee, and assess the situation. “I can ski down,” I declare. With only one ski, it won’t be easy, but waiting here isn’t an option.

“But you only have one ski,” Abigail protests.

“I like a challenge,” I say with a shrug, trying to hide the pain. I position the ski on my good leg. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than standing around in the cold. I don’t think I’ll be skiing again anytime soon. This is my Swan song.

“You can head off,” I tell the young boarder. “We’ll manage just fine.”

“Really? Thanks, man. Thanks.” He gives me a grateful look, running off before I change my mind.

“Don’t you need to get his details or something?” Abigail questions.

“I’ll be alright, and I don’t need his money,” I say, making my way down the slope.

My knee cries out in protest as I ski down the hill. Trying to slow down only makes it worse, so I push through the pain and focus on getting down quickly. Thankfully, the slope is an easy one.
