Chapter 26
Wednesday, 9:10 p.m
As they left Mr. Thibodeauxâs home, Ash looked over at her motherâs tiny house next door, part of her longing to see her but another part wanting to run away and never return. Her mother had made her choicesâ¦and nearly sunk Ashâs life and future in the process.
âWho lives there?â Erin asked.
Ash licked her lips. âMy mother.â
âYou want to say hello?â
Erinâs voice was kindly, and that sent the emotions swirling through her. Ash blinked back the burn in her nasal cavity, refusing to let tears fall. She didnât cry for her motherâshe was a lost cause. Swallowing hard, she looked away and shook her head. âNo. More than likely she has company.â
Erin paused on the curb. She pulled out her keys and fiddled with them. âYou know something? I respect you. A lot.â She said the last bit with wide eyesâas if it was a shock.
And it was. Ash hadnât expected Erin to beâ¦nice. She didnât want her to be. Adversarial was better, kept the lines clear.
Erinâs gaze swept the area, lingering on the tiny homes, the weeds popping up through porches and ancient, crumbled sidewalks, the old vehicles in short driveways. âI had opportunities you never did.â
Ash snorted. So did most people.
âBut I didnât take advantage of them,â Erin continued. âI justâ¦didnât realize how lucky I was. You must have had to work so hard to get to college, let alone complete a degree. All Iâm saying is, I donât think you threw that away to murder your would-be boss.â
Erin jangled her keys. She suddenly seemed stiffer, more professionalâas if sheâd slipped back into cop mode. âAs a member of law enforcement, itâs my responsibility to protect citizens from harmful activities.â The keys jangled again, and Erin seemed agitated, upset. She glanced over at the car. âYou could ask for a restraining order against John.â
Ash considered that. âCould I, though? Wouldnât he just say he was investigating a case?â
Erin chewed her lip. âNot if I backed you up.â She shifted. âWell, youâre right, but my statement would get him a flag in his personnel file.â
A tiny seed of warmth winnowed into Ashâs belly. She could feel Johnâs gaze on her; it was heavy but also resigned. âDo you think your brother would plant evidence to make me appear guilty?â she asked. âOr hurt me?â
âNo,â Erin said firmly. âNever. Thatâs why I donât understand his behavior. Heâs always wanted to help peopleâto do the right thing, even when it was hard.â She swallowed, her throat working. âI looked up to him, worshipped him. Thatâs why I went into law enforcement, so heâd be proud of me.â
Ash nodded, and Erin sighed. They climbed into the car, weighed down with their thoughts. John said nothing, but after sheâd clicked her seatbelt, Ash turned to face him.
âWould you plant evidence against me?â
A muscle in his cheek jumped. âNo.â
âAnd did you break into my apartment?â
âNo.â
âCan you prove that?â
The muscle flexed again. âIâm not sure, but I can state unequivocally that the person who did break in threw a pen with the Swamp Life Society logo into your bedroom as he fled.
