Chapter 21

Before the party Flynn and I stopped at the local drive-in, Dairy Dock, to grab something to eat. I ordered chicken tenders and fries, and Flynn got a cheeseburger basket and ordered us both chocolate malts. When I tried to get him to let me pay for my dinner, he refused.

“Come on, Flynn. You can’t have that much money left. You’ve been in town for over a month and you still don’t have a job yet.” I tried to shove some of my B&B tip money into his hand before the roller-skating waitress appeared at our window again.

He shoved it back towards me and pretended to look offended. “First of all, ouch. And second of all, I’m this close to landing a job. In the meantime, I’ve still got a few bucks in my pocket. I think I can afford a chicken tender basket.”

“Flynn!” I tried again to stick some money in the pocket of his shorts.

He wrestled me away, laughing. “Come on, Red. Please! It’s the rules.”

I sat back in my seat. “The rules, huh? What rules?”

“The rules of being invited somewhere.”

I quirked a brow. “Explain?”

Leaning one elbow out his window, he turned slightly to face me. “It’s really not that hard. I invited you out, therefore I pay. If you had invited me out, you’d have to pay.” Pointing a finger at me, he pretended to be serious suddenly. “Remember that for our next non-date.”

“Oh, are we doing another one?”

“If you keep looking like that we are.” He gave me an appreciative nod.

I’d let Holly and Jax dress me after telling them I needed to look hot to make Hugh jealous. I hadn’t told them it was Flynn’s idea. My only rule was that I wanted to stay true to my own style. I didn’t want to wind up dressed in a short skirt and low-cut sweater like some Holly clone. So they’d dressed me in a pair of destroyed black skinny jeans, Holly’s high-heeled black studded booties, and a push-up bra that came with the boobs, and Jax had pulled an old, slightly shrunken rock band T-shirt out of my closet, taken a pair of scissors, cut the sleeves off and cut a crisscrossed keyhole out of the neckline so my new-to-me cleavage and arms were exposed. I’d thrown on the leather jacket I’d found at a thrift store over the summer, and after Holly had blown out my hair, I’d pulled on a slouchy black beanie. The girls had gone a little thicker than usual on my eyeliner and I’d let Holly convince me to try a red lipstick for the evening. It certainly wasn’t Hugh’s style by any means, but I felt strong and kind of sexy in the outfit and Holly had told me that it didn’t matter if it wasn’t Hugh’s style, confidence was the hottest thing a girl could wear anyway. And by the way that Flynn was smiling at me, I guessed she was right.

“You know when I said to look hot, I didn’t realize I was going to need to bring a fire extinguisher along.
