CHAPTER 13
THE ART OF INTERROGATION
WHITNEY
Collin stopped by my house around eight oâclock Tuesday evening. He sat at one end of the couch, rubbing the feet Iâd been on all day, while I lounged at the other. Sawdust and Cleo lay side by side on my lap, each one draped over a thigh, and I paid Collinâs foot massage forward by rubbing their ears. The two purred in complete contentment and gratitude. I would have purred for Collin, too, if I could.
As he worked the ball of my foot, he filled me in on the latest developmentsâat least where other potential suspects were concerned. In light of the fact that Woodruffâs murder happened on our property and Sibleyâs unexplained death took place right next door, I knew that the authorities were still suspicious of Buck and me, excluding Collin, of course. He knew my cousin and I were totally innocent. Even so, he could only share so much evidence that might help us clear our names.
âNo one at Woodruffâs trailer park saw any unusual activity at his place. They said he was a nice guy, drove slow when kids were playing outside, kept his yard tidy. The manager said the same. Everyone I spoke to said theyâd never seen any visitors at Woodruffâs trailer, let alone people coming and going at all hours. If Woodruff was selling drugs, he wasnât doing it out of his home.â
âIf?â I said. âWhy else would he have a fanny pack containing individual bags of marijuana if he wasnât dealing drugs?â
âGood question,â Collin said.
âWhat about the burger place?â I asked. âCould someone have followed him from there?â
âI reviewed the security camera footage from the restaurant. If someone trailed Woodruff from the restaurant, it wasnât obvious. I ran the license plates on the vehicles in the parking lot. One of them belonged to a guy with a domestic violence charge, but his car remained there well after Woodruff was gone.â
In other words, Collin had no new leads in Woodruffâs homicide case. Darn. Of course, the deliverymanâs death wasnât the only suspicious death under investigation. âWhat about Nolan Sibley?â
âHis murder is in the hands of the Sumner County Sheriffâs Department. Theyâre keeping me in the loop, though, since his death could be related to Woodruffâs. Last I heard, theyâre still trying to piece things together. Heâs married, but his wife up and left him years ago. Sheâs living in Florida. According to the kids, sheâd had enough of her selfish and greedy husband and couldnât take it anymore. He seemed to be expecting her to come to her senses and come back one day, couldnât imagine sheâd give up a prize like him. She still had access to their bank accounts, so she didnât bother filing for divorce. His daughter and son live here in Nashville, but they only saw him on occasion. They both said he wasnât a pleasant person to be around, that all he seemed to care about was building his horse operation. Sibleyâs son
