Chapter 14
Kari
After Hunter and the other officers left, Kari and Kasi quickly dressed and readied themselves for work.
“Are you girls sure you need to open the shop today?” Nancy asked her daughters.
“I’m afraid so, mom,” Kari answered. “We’ve had a ton of internet orders that need to be prepared and shipped out. Not to mention the fact that our regular customers would be devastated if we didn’t open up for them.”
Seeing her mother’s subtle nod in her sister’s direction, Kari realized that she sounded slightly insensitive.
Stealing a quick glance at her sister, Kari quickly added, “But if Kasi doesn’t feel up to going I today, I can manage by myself.”
“I don’t think so,” Kasi interjected. “I’m not letting some freak scare me away from my own shop. Besides, it’s not like I’m going to be alone.”
With a concerned look on her face, Kari asked, “Are you sure? I don’t mind if you feel like you need to take a day off.”
“I’m going and that’s final.”
Kari knew from experience that it was useless to try to reason with her, so she quickly turned to her parents to plead her sister’s case.
“I know you’re worried about Kasi, but you really shouldn’t. I promise I won’t leave her alone, not even for one minute. In fact, neither of us will be alone most of the day. Apart from a short lull in the afternoon, the place is usually very busy.”
Worried looks passed between mother and father, but it wasn’t long before both parents finally agreed that getting back to a normal routine would be best for everyone.
“If we hurry, we’ll only be a few minutes late opening up. Our early birds are generally locals so I’m sure they will understand.” Kari called out over her shoulder as the sisters raced from the house.
Once the girls turned the corner on the street where their shop was located, they could see a good-sized line had already formed at the entrance. Quickly they parked and hurried to open the door offering their apologies as they went.
Several of their regulars had already heard that there was some sort of a commotion at the Sweet home earlier that morning. Knowing that there was a mystery afoot, they took no time in heading over to On Bitter Grounds.
As Kari and Kasi rushed around brewing coffee and warming up the espresso machine, they not only fielded several questions regarding the “burglary” at their parents’ house but they also had to deal with the customers who were less than understanding at their tardiness.
To make up for the inconvenience, Kasi came up with the idea of having those customers bring back in their receipt tomorrow for a free pastry. Somehow the thought of getting something free tended to make even the grumpiest of customers happy.
“Great idea!” Kari whispered to Kasi as they passed each other for what had to be the fiftieth time since walking through the door.
I wish the thought of free food calmed my nerves! Kari thought. Putting on a strained smile, Kari turned around to face the line of customers once again.
