The damage notifications were significantly bigger than last time. Nathan’s magic defense was starting to lose its effectiveness, as he’d known it would. When he looked back up from his screen the vampire woman was gone. She’d used some kind of invisibility of her own. He supposed that was only fair.

A fireball whooshed behind him, but Nathan dove out of the way, taking no damage. He stood back up in a patch of densely packed cobblestones in the center of what once had probably been a market. He summoned the tomahawk into his left hand, scanning around him in a circle. Even though she had done something to shield herself from his detection skill, he could still vaguely sense her presence… behind him.

Nathan turned around to see her appear again with both of her hands pointed at him, finishing a powerful green spell that belched violent swirling energy in his direction. The magic poured in his direction and exploded into a wash of green light that spread out all around him. Nathan looked down at his screen. There were no damage notifications. They were dark robots! The guide had called them demonic automatons and they’d been created by a sort of evil mage college called the Uhkaan Tentsuu. There were several types of them, including one variety that contained an actual soul that could be molded into quite a few of the dark job classes. Nathan had spent hours pouring over the designs and their capabilities, so he was pretty sure what he was looking at. These were a soulless design the guide had called Selem, which meant “Sword” in the demonic tongue.

“What are you doing?” Shan snapped. “Get out of the stone!”

“I want to see them up close,” Nathan said. “These are one of the coolest things in this whole setting.”

“You WHAT?” Shan shouted, her eyes flashing to light blue.

“I said I–”

“I know what you said!” Shan cut him off. “I want to know why!”

The automatons were close now. Each was formed of layers of forged dark steel and shaped vaguely like a human-insect hybrid. The sleek, scary design made their purpose fully evident from the moment you saw them, but
