When Sarah, Logan, and Géza entered the Kiburg hotel, Paul brought them to a small meeting room and told them to wait. While Sarah and Kados Géza discussed music, Logan felt a mixture of apprehension and exhilaration. He could feel something exciting was about to happen.

Chancellor Bandemer arrived with a flourish, pausing dramatically in the doorway. He wore a coat of bright pink silk embroidered with peacocks.

As Logan introduced Bandemer to his mother, another man entered. Something in his attitude reminded Logan of his father, probably due to his size for the man was bear-like. Introduced as Dr. Sebastian Stuart, Logan realized the newcomer was the scientist Brigit was so keen about.

The next person was a round Humpty-Dumpty character of a man in his mid fifties called Herr Parkinson. Then a thin nervous woman in her thirties, who stared at Logan with greedy, bulging eyes. She was Mme. Barbier.

While the introductions were being made, a waiter brought in three dishes with covers. They were placed on a table near where Logan was standing. He hoped it was food, for he was starving.

Tapping the floor with his stick, the chancellor silenced everyone as he began to explain the experiment he had planned.

“Logan Dannon is a human student here at Leopold-Ottos-Universität Geheimetür. Please confirm to these fine people that you are of human parentage.”

Startled, Géza’s hand on Sarah’s arm stopped her from stepping forward. Logan told the group, “Yes, I am. Mrs. Dannon is my mother,” Logan indicated her with his hand, “and my father is a banker from Texas.”

“Good, good,” said Bandemer, giving a wide smile to them all like a carnival barker. “Now, tell us what it means to be a bard.”

So it was going to be the performing dog trick? While it irritated him how Bandemer liked to show off Logan’s talents, he was now experienced in explaining himself. At least Logan had the phrases down pat.

“A bard is a talent only available to humans. I became one through an initiation.” (Better to avoid discussing the particulars of that, don’t want to make mom angry.) “The general gifts are the ability to see through fae Glamour, to recognize truth, and the art of persuasion.”

At the end of Logan’s speech, Chancellor Bandemer looked from one to the other of his small group.

“Ready to proceed?”

The chancellor’s comments received nods. Bandemer stepped to the first cover. With his hand resting on the handle of the dome, he told Logan, “All you have to do is tell us what you see when I lift this.”

“All right, sir.” It seemed simple enough, but there was obviously something unusual about the entire situation. Logan braced himself as Bandemer warned his audience, “Say nothing.”

The cover lifted, and Mme. Barbier broke Bandemer’s request by screaming.
