“Bart and Nate teaming up to take out Cletus…” Wanda took a long sip of coffee as she considered. “I suppose that would follow the saying—the enemy of my enemy is my friend…”

“Were Bart and Nate technically enemies?” Pamela held her mug, warming her hands instead of relying on caffeine. “Other than that moment at the rehearsal, I don’t think I’ve ever heard their names linked before.”

“That’s where Charlie and I fell as we talked about it last night.” The three of us launched into catch-up mode the second we’d arrived for our Twister Sisters breakfast date at the diner. The food had yet to arrive, and we were deep into it. “However, I would’ve said the same about Bart and Cletus as well, at least up until The Hen House column in The Mule Bugle. But the more we find out, the more ties there are between the two men. Perhaps the same is true for Bart and Nate.”

Pamela hummed in an unconvinced tone. “Feels like a stretch. Goodness knows I was grateful to Cletus finally managing to get that gun club pulled out of the high school, but would Nate really want to kill him over that?”

“No.” I sighed, frustrated, then realized I sounded as if I was directing my short fuse toward Pamela specifically. “Sorry, that wasn’t about you. I know we need to consider every possibility, but that one just seems so far-fetched. If that was the case, John and Thomas would’ve been arrested, not John and Charlie.”

Wanda grunted, then shook her head. “Let’s see… one of those is an extremely rich white man in the highest position at the bank, who’s married to the mayor. I wonder who is more likely to get pulled in on bogus charges, Thomas Price or Charlie Harris?” Wanda hurried on as Pamela began to sputter a protest. “I know things are better in the world than they used to be and I’d say Willow Lane is above the curve in that regard, but with some people, that’s not saying much. And if we’re talking about Lester, Jed Olson, and possibly Nathaniel Wakes, then it means next to squat.”

“I’m not saying you’re wrong on those facts, Wanda. It’s not my place to, for one, and two…” I considered my wording. “While not taking that away as a possibility, do you think that the racial
