Unexpected Information
Two uniformed officers barrelled around the edge of the building and into the rear courtyard. Their flashlights played over the scene before them as they themselves skidded to a stop just like their car had.
In front of them was a giant dog and an old man lying on the floor with another man on top of him. The man on top had his butt hanging out and what appeared to be a sparkly red thong running between his hairy cheeks. Behind them both was a grey-haired lady with her hair in curlers and a flannel dressing gown that barely covered that which was essential.
Shining their flashlights at Rex was the wrong thing to do; it blinded him so he couldnât see it was cops holding the lights. He felt threatened and went into defensive mode; his human was on the ground and making sounds of pain. Whoever these new humans were, until he knew they were here to help, he was going to drive them away.
Dennis managed to reverse himself off the crazy old man. The dog was distracted by someone new and barking madly at them now instead of him. Maybe this was his chance to get away from whatever craziness this was and get safely inside with June.
He pushed off the ground and clambered to his feet, but before he could take a step, the giant dog swung his face full of teeth back in his direction.
âRex,â Albert coughed, the word barely making it past his lips. He coughed again. Dennis had landed on Albertâs chest as much as anywhere else and his ribs felt bruised or crushed or something. Rex was still barking, and it was becoming a problem. June knew the assailant somehow, that was confusing, but the police were here now so he needed to calm the dog down. âRex!â Albert shouted again.
This time Rex heard him, and he felt relief that his human was okay. He rushed over to tell him how relieved he felt, licking his face, and nuzzling him as his tail wagged like mad.
âOkay, dog, okay. Iâll be fine,â Albert did his best to fend off the dogâs advances and the cops closed in.
âNobody move.â The copâs voice left little room for discussion as she barked her order.
To her left, a manâs voice added, âI want to see hands, everyone. Show me your hands now.â
Albert lifted one hand. âIâm holding the dog,â he explained. âI think it best if I donât let him go until he sees your uniforms.â
The cops used caution to approach slowly. There were no weapons visible and the youngest of the three people looked to be in her sixties and very little threat. The dog, if anything, presented the danger, but it too was calm now.
Relaxing a little, the female officer said, âWe got a report of someone trying to apprehend a known criminal. Which one of you made the call?â
Albert pulled himself off the ground using Rex for leverage. âThat would be me. There was
