My heart stopped for a moment, then began thudding loudly in my chest, muffling my ears. I glanced around the rest of the room, but we were alone. My eyes searched for something concrete to land on, anything to indicate what had happened here, even as I avoided looking at the knife sticking out of her chest. I recognized the handle immediately, as I’d bought that knife set for Hank when he’d officially transitioned into the bistro’s chef last year. It was a wooden handle, with a criss-cross pattern down the length of the handle. I’d spent weeks searching for the perfect gift for him, and I’d loved the design on this handle when I'd finally found it online.

I stumbled out of the room, my thoughts racing and my heartbeat pounding in my ears. Where was Hank? Why was his knife in a dead woman’s chest? Did he… did he kill her?

A loud ringing suddenly filled the hallway, and I almost jumped out of my skin. I pulled my phone out of my pocket on autopilot, Patel’s name flashing across the screen. She must’ve been calling me back to discuss the text I had sent her about Emily and Nigel’s fight. Looked like Emily probably hadn’t killed Chad, since she was now dead. And Richard, the third contestant, had left on a flight the day before to be with his family, so he hadn’t killed her, either. Where was Nigel right now?

What about Hank? He wasn’t a killer, but I knew that was his knife, and I hadn't seen him for a while. Had he murdered Emily, then snuck away so that he wouldn't get caught?

Oh, god, I couldn’t even believe I was thinking these thoughts. What was I going to do? Should I take the knife and pretend I hadn’t found it sticking out of Emily’s dead body?

My phone’s ringer stopped, then started up again as Patel called back. No, I couldn’t touch anything at a crime scene, and I definitely couldn’t remove the murder weapon, no matter how much I wanted to save Hank. I needed to report this crime and let the police handle it. I hit Accept on my phone and held it up against my ear, my stomach in knots as I knew what was going to happen next.
