Chapter Fifteen

“He’s talking?” I repeated.

“Yes.” Lance flashed his signature impish smile, which I knew could only mean one thing. He was up to no good. “He’s talking, so he must know who the killer is.”

“How do you know this?”

He peered over the top of the mug. “Please. I have my sources.”

“At the hospital?” I cradled my coffee in my hands.

“Everywhere. Everywhere.” He took a long, slow deliberate sip of his drink. “So, shall we?”

“Shall we what?”

“Pay our dear friend Tim a visit?”

“We can’t do that,” I protested. “Plus you just said you have a full day of meetings.”

“Exactly. No time like the present.” Lance set his coffee mug on the table and picked up a glove. “I think our dearest friend Tim would appreciate a pick-me-up visit from his friends and a box of Torte’s pastries to perk up his spirits. Call it community kindness.”

“Lance, you’re too much.”

“You think I jest? I assure you I’m serious. Deadly serious.” His voice filled with emotion. “Truth be told, after last night, I will admit that I’m shaken. I had just had a chat with Dylan before he was brutally killed. He wasn’t going to win any awards for being the smartest person in the room, nor could he have remembered a single line or stage direction had I cast him as an extra, despite his alternatively handsome jawline, but my God, to have been murdered moments later.” Lance shuddered. “I may have been the last person to see him alive, Juliet. I intend to do anything and everything I can to help bring his killer to justice.”

“I get it.” It was true. I understood Lance’s need to right such a terrible wrong.

“Excellent.” He pulled his glove over his long, lanky fingers like a debutante dressing for a ball. “Go box up some delightful treats. Put them on my credit card. Grab your coat and meet me here in five.”

When I didn’t move, he shooed me away. “Make haste. I’m due at a dreaded budget meeting at eleven sharp, so chop-chop.”

Lance had an uncanny ability to talk me into pulling the craziest stunts, and yet I couldn’t argue that I did want to talk to Tim. If he really was awake and coherent, maybe he could tell us who had pulled the shelving unit down on him. He might be the key to clearing Javier and closing in on Dylan’s killer.

I asked Rosa to package an assortment of sweet and savory treats. While I waited for her to fill one of our pastry boxes with blueberry crumble muffins and pecan zucchini bread, I had a moment of hesitation. Was this a bad idea?

Yes. Undoubtedly.

Lance was notorious for pushing boundaries and walking a thin line between semi-innocent meddling and obstructing justice.

When Rosa handed me the box, her face was decades lighter than it had been earlier. “Thank you for helping, Jules. It means so much to me.” Her hands trembled as she spoke. “It means more than I can ever tell you. I know Javier has been wrongly accused, and he needs all the help he can get.
