On a good day you can escape a family meal within an hour of sitting to the table. Fortunately, Rueâs return meant that she was bearing the brunt of the heckling and judgmental comments so I was able to slide out unnoticed. Well, that was until TJ followed me out to the car.
âYouâre working with the police again?â he called out. I had one hand on the car door handle, I had been so close to getting away.
âYeah, there are like a million people in town for Birdieâs wedding and all of them need interviewing I guess, or at least the ones that are on camera doing weird stuff,â I replied.
âDo you think itâs wise to be out on your own if a crazed person is loose on the streets?â
âWell I doubt they are gonna come after me,â I offered.
âWhat if this man was attacked by a witch hunter? Your grandmother seems pretty confident that this wedding is going to attract some unsavory folk to Vanish Valley and if someone is already in the hospital then it doesnât bode well.â
âI donât think the man I found has magic, he is just a regular, run-of-the-mill con man with greasy hair and a lack of ethics. Look, Iâll be careful,â I grinned. âIâll be back later with a TV anyway, so do wait up for me!â
âYou donât have to get that tonight, you probably have enough going on with the wedding, right? Iâm sure you are dealing with your own feelings about being the last single gal on the shelf,â TJ said, his ghostly head tilted to the side sympathetically.
âOn the shelf? Iâm in a relationship!â
âYeah, but youâre not engaged or anything. You could die tomorrow and what would it say on your death certificate? Never married, thatâs what it would say,â TJ shrugged.
âI donât think they make jabs about your marital status on a death certificate.â Not anymore at least. âBut thanks for worrying about something insane and taking my mind off real problems,â I smirked.
He still looked at me with concern, I guess it was harder to keep an eye on me now that I didnât live on the property. âAre you ever planning on asking me about that sixth house I told you about?â he asked.
âThat depends,â I hummed. âIf I ask you, will you actually tell me? Or will you go off on one of your long stories that doesnât really go anywhere?â
âIt was 1968,â he began. I guess I had my answer. âMy dad was still alive back then, but was getting a bit, you know⦠he was a few ants short of a picnic. Anyway, we invited him to live with us and helped make sure he got three square meals a day and a warm bed at night. He helped with your Aunt Tammy when she was a toddler, and believe me, having three witches in the house under four years old, we needed all the help we could get.
âI remember him stressing the need to keep the family all together, how it was the only way to make sure we were all safe.
