We let Silas say goodbye to his old owner alone for a few minutes. When he came out of the door his head and tail were drooping, but he came straight over to me and sat on my foot.

“He’d like to go home now,” Rainey said, unnecessarily.

I held my arms out to him and he climbed into the willingly enough. I held him gingerly, trying not to hurt him. I turned toward my sisters. “Thank you for all your help,” I told them. “Can you ask Silas if he needs to see a vet… or a healer?”

Starrie shook her head. “I’ll send over something we’ve been working on with Mom,” she said. “It will take care of everything—mostly it’s just backlash burns… Silas says Aria tried to fight with magic, but it just snapped back at her and he got caught in the recoil. It knocked him out cold… which is why he’s alive. When he came to, Aria was already dead and Stinky was gone.”

I scratched the cat’s chin. “Well, I’m glad you’re alive,” I told him. “I have a feeling we’re really going to like each other.”
