Friday rolled around, and I hadn’t heard a peep from Layla. If I weren’t dying to see her, I would’ve canceled on everyone tonight, but I wasn’t going to let her off the hook that easy. She’d probably be happy if I did.

I didn’t give her any warning. We’d made plans weeks ago, so I showed up at her place at seven as we’d discussed. When she opened the door, her eyes went wide when she saw me. She was in a towel and nowhere near ready.

“Shit. I’m sorry. I totally forgot.”

Wow. Was she serious right now? “Forget it. I can go without you; I’ll just tell them you’re sick.”

She stared at me without blinking and didn’t say anything. I waited another thirty seconds before turning and walking away.

“Are you for real?”

I turned around to find her glaring at me with her hand on her hip like I was the one who did something wrong.

I stepped up close and looked down at her. “Layla, I haven’t seen you for almost two weeks. Your texts are short at best, and then you forget about tonight. What did you expect my reaction would be?”

“I’m sorry. I wasn’t feeling well last week, and I’ve had a lot on my mind.”

I wanted nothing more than to kiss her and have those same feelings again, but I wasn’t going to make this easy for her. She’d been avoiding me since the engagement party.

I reached up and cupped her cheek. “Layla, I know you say you weren’t feeling well, and I’ll give you that, but you’ve been avoiding me a lot since you moved back home. I feel like you’ve pushed me away at every turn. What did I do wrong?”

Her eyes looked down and then back up to mine. “Nothing. Everything is fine. Can I get ready? As long as I don’t have to get all dolled up, I’ll be ready in ten minutes.”

I released her face and stepped back. “Have at it.”

She sighed. “Have a seat, and I’ll be quick. Promise.”

Sure enough, ten minutes later, she walked out looking hot as ever in a pair of skinny jeans and a graphic tee with her hair up in a messy bun. “Please tell me that this is casual, and I won’t look like a bum.”

“You look great.”

She picked up her keys. “Ready?”

“Ready.”

Before we walked outside, she asked. “Hey, can we take the Mercedes?”

My brow furrowed. “Sure…why? Do you have something against the Porsche?”

She bit her lip and shrugged. “No, I just love it. I don’t know why.”

“To the G-Wagon.” I put my arm up like Superman and ran in a circle around her.

She slapped me on the shoulder. “You’re such a dork.”

The first half of the ride was quiet. I wanted to push her to talk to me, but I wasn’t about to piss her off. I wanted us to have a good night, and that wouldn’t help.

Her leg had been bouncing, and she couldn’t seem to sit still. She seemed to be more nervous now than before the engagement party.
