Chapter 7

Trixie

She was hard to work with, but she was trying. Reid tried to help but didn't know what to do. She lacked speed.

He'd observed, and it was clear that she knew how to do the job. She just couldn't do it as quickly as necessary. It was something only time would help.

Why hadn't her speed improved in the time she'd been in Alaska? These new guys had been on the job long enough that the speed should have come.

“How long have you been working with Robert?” Reid asked.

“I haven't been working with Robert. Rita put us together and then sent us here," Trixie admitted.

Now, that was something to think about. Why had Tyne changed the teams? He basically selected who he would send to Reid.

“What are you doing right now?" He asked.

“I'm giving the box time to start working properly. That’s what Carl told me to do. He explained that because of the colder weather, it takes ten minutes before I can attach the wires," She replied.

“He's full of it. Attach the wires immediately and move on to the next step. That may be where you're losing some of your time."

Reid hadn't watched her when she had set up the first box. Ten minutes was a lot to lose on nothing.

They completed the job and went to lunch. They were close to town and could have returned to the office, but Reid didn't want to waste more time than they'd already lost.

“Anything else Carl told you that was different than your original training?” Reid asked.

“There were a few things.” Trixie began to explain what she thought was odd.

He also told her he had done a job like this before and knew what to do in cold weather. Carl made it sound logical that the cold would make a difference in how things worked.

Trixie believed him and began applying all his wisdom to her work. It slowed her down considerably, but she thought giving the customers a working security system was necessary.

“Maybe he was just messing with you, but none of the things he told you are necessary. Do it like you were trained and try to get faster. You'll be fine," Reid explained.

It would certainly make it easier for her to do it right rather than how Carl told her to. Something was wrong with Carl. Reid suspected Carl had been sent in to cause the business issues.

The information was significant enough that he intended to call Rita and have her give the information to the boss as soon as possible. He didn't want to make the call around Trixie because he wasn't one hundred percent sure of her.

The last half of the day went much better, and he did find time to make that call. Once they weeded out all the bad ones, those left would work out just fine.

They needed installers to do the job right and to do it quickly. Trixie's speed had gone up by a great deal once she stopped doing the silly stuff Carl advised her needed to be done.
