By the time Moira got through enough of the stones to figure they were all fakes, Boudreau was holding on to the bench, looking almost as green as her sweater. Good thing I was sitting down. My knees probably would have folded up on me. Just the velocity of the thoughts spinning in my head could have sent me falling on my face.

The stones had been placed in the inner compartment of the briefcase right in front of me in the diamond mart back in New York. The case had been closed and handcuffed to my wrist. I hadn’t unlocked the manacles until I was in the van with Boudreau. I hadn’t even unlocked the damn things when I used the lavatory on the airplane. Talk about awkward.

I had insisted that Boudreau buy the seat next to me on the flight to L.A., so it would remain empty. I had avoided conversations with strangers. Had drunk no alcohol. Had not fallen asleep—well, maybe I’d nodded off a couple of times, but never long enough for somebody to search me for the keys, unlock the cuffs, open the case, and substitute phonies for the real diamonds.

Assuming they were genuine to begin with. Could the switch have taken place back in New York? Would an old, established firm really do something like that?

I knew Boudreau would never believe it. There was only one person he would hold responsible for the theft.

“You—” He wheeled around, teeth bared and ready to go for my throat. “What the bloody hell have you done with my diamonds?”
