Yan Liang hung up and stared at his phone in shock. A Xu relative had informed him that his niece died when she was driving and it was lucky that other people were not hurt. He was told that her husband was distraught at the news, especially as he had been in a remote village at the time, teaching underprivileged students. The day after the accident, the traffic police had written their report, the hospital completed the death certification, and Zhang Dongsheng had arranged for the immediate cremation of the body. But according to local custom, the family should wait seven days before cremating and burying the dead. That Xu Jing’s parents were cremated so quickly was understandable due to the horrible nature of their accident. But why was Xu Jing cremated so soon after her death? It didn’t make sense. Yan Liang’s eyebrows knitted, remembering how his niece had warned him that if she died it would be Zhang’s doing. Did he have the capacity to kill his wife?

Yan Liang was vexed. He sat in his desk chair for a good half hour, rubbing his eyes. Finally he left for the police station.
