CHAPTER TWENTY

Curly Custody

Kasouf caused a scene bad enough to summon most of the science department, including Professor Kirke with an ‘e’. His claims of a woman bearing a weapon put that part of the university campus into a full lock down for the afternoon. Kit wasn’t surprised when the professor made things ten times worse by instructing the security officers to call the police. She watched the stringy ringlets bounce against the professor’s cheeks as she postured in front of her. She bit her lip to stop herself suggesting the woman made more time to Scrunch Out the Crunch. She would have applauded any other new Curly, but this one ground her gears.

Bindy appeared at the laboratory window behind a group of other spectators and begged Kit with her eyes not to give her away. She peered over the frosted portion of the glass with wide-eyed terror. When she drew a line across her throat, Kit changed her story to a version that didn’t involve the younger girl’s guided tour.

Jackson held onto Kit’s arm as he strode towards his police car. She sensed people stopping to watch her shameful progress. His hands were gentle but firm, the effect reducing Kit to the status of a naughty child. She sat in the front of Jackson’s police car in silence, staring at the corner of her hairdressing bag as it shivered on the dashboard with the motion of the vehicle. He’d confiscated her scissors.

Jackson took furtive, sideways glances at her when he thought she wasn’t looking. Kit pursed her lips and ignored him, turning her face away from his scrutiny. She’d hoped he might realise she presented no direct threat to the staff or students. But he’d made her feel like a terrorist, as though her ratty bag contained a bomb or a loaded gun instead of hair clips and shears.

A heavy shower came from nowhere and doused the rock-hard earth. It appeared the parched ground rejected it, sending it running across roads and shooting from drains in dirty fountains. As visibility grew difficult through the swishing windscreen wipers, Jackson pulled the police car over on the side of a rural road just north of the city. The wheels bumped over grit and the brakes squeaked as they splashed through puddles forming in potholes. Kit tensed as Jackson killed the engine. Then he turned in his seat. “What are you playing at?” he demanded. “Don’t you understand how bad that could have got? You’re lucky that alert got squashed before it became a full-blown crisis. Why did you even go to the university?”

“Because my friend is missing!” Kit slammed her fists into the seat either side of her. “And nobody cares except me. And maybe Jerry.” The thought of Jerry took her mind to the missing Pineapple Lumps and she released a gasp of realisation. “Oh, my goodness!” She clapped her hands over her mouth.

“What?” Jackson’s eyes widened in alarm and he twisted his body further. He caught Kit’s flailing hand as she released her seatbelt and pushed herself forward.
