CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

‘What the…’ Leah said, finishing with a small groan. The sliver of promise that we’d started the day with vanished at the sight of Kaiaphas’ insidious yellow eyes.

Kaiaphas stood alone in a room with bare white walls and no distinguishing features. It was impossible to ascertain his location.

Kaiaphas was already mid-sentence when the television was turned on, but we didn’t seem to have missed much.

‘…that will soon be spoiled by all the squabbling imbeciles who strive to keep you underfoot. I am not from this city, and I am not like the people who keep Sangford in their own greedy strangleholds. I am here to help you. I am here to liberate you from tyranny.

‘The first steps have already been taken. Dorian Gray is no more. One would think that that would be enough to free the good people of Sangford, but no. Dorian did not rule the City alone. A hydra has many heads and all must be removed before a victory can be claimed.’

The camera zoomed out to reveal a second person in the room.

Monroe.

Raphael let out a small hiss at the sight of the vampire who had trapped him for 97 years.

Monroe was on his knees, the material of his clothing torn and ragged around him. His hands were bound by a heavy metal collar attached to the wall with a thick chain. Behind him, more of the brick wall opened up to reveal several windows that had been covered with aged curtains. It wasn’t enough to figure out the location. I needed more clues.

‘This is Henry Monroe,’ said Kaiaphas.

Monroe didn’t react to the sound of his name; he kept his gaze on the floor. His dark hair covered his eyes.

‘How the mighty have fallen,’ said Marcus, the delight in his tone unhidden. I looked at him warily, wondering if Kaiaphas was about to claim an ally in Marcus.

Kaiaphas’s hand hovered over Monroe’s head as if he was going to touch him, but then he thought better of it and retracted his appendage.

‘Were it not for Henry here, Dorian would very likely have failed to take control of Sangford. Henry was instrumental in his plans. This savage vampire delivered your city to a corrupt immortal who cared only for his own whims and desires. How many people fell victim to Henry Monroe? How many families were torn apart? How many lives were ruined? How many of you, the good and innocent citizens, saw this vile vampire in the street, and turned the other way out of fear?

‘I implore you to not let creatures like this one hold you down. I want you, the people, to rise up and take your city back. Snatch it from the hands of the greedy and the corrupt. Take control of this city which gives you nothing, and yet it owes you everything.

‘I understand you are likely confused and afraid. I would too be I in your position. So, allow me to take the first step on your behalf. The guilty must pay.
