It wasn’t very good, for either of them. He was in too much discomfort and she was unable to hide her weariness. At the end, she was lying on top. Her body clenched his tightly at the moment of release, then she leaned back, sitting up, closing her eyes.

“Oh, God,” she said, making the words sound bleak.

“You okay?”

“I’m fine, Andy.” She eased herself off him, then shifted to the edge of the bed, sitting hunched forward.

He stroked her back. She gave a shudder of her shoulders. He tried to bring her close to him again, but she pulled away.

“Are you crying?” he asked.

She shook her head, keeping her face turned away from him.

“I’m scared, Andy.”

“I guess we’ve all got good reason to be.”

“I’m scared for you. I’m scared for me. I’m scared for the whole goddamn world.”

“Katie …”

“I should never have taken this job.” Her shoulders quivered again. She put her hands on them, long fingers, the grotesque ring. “Shit.”

“There are other jobs.”

“No there aren’t. Not for me. I’m lucky to have it. I don’t want to screw it up, like I … You’ve no idea. I hate to get up in the morning. You just don’t know what a thoroughly bad man he is. He’s as fucked up and evil as the sons of bitches who vote for him.”

“Why don’t you quit, for God’s sake? Try one of the TV stations here. If nothing else, they like people who work cheap. I know a guy who runs one of them.”

“It’s no good. My health problems. I’m stuck, Andy. It’s my own fault. Like everything else in my life.” She gave another shudder, then turned to look at him over her shoulder, her smile made weird by her sadness. “I’m sorry. I’m just so damned tired. You shouldn’t have come.”

“I thought somehow I’d be welcome.”

“If you weren’t welcome, I wouldn’t have let you in. But you shouldn’t have come. I’ve got all this work. You’d better go.”

He got dressed. She stayed where she was, waiting patiently.

When he was ready, he leaned down and kissed her. She responded with just enough warmth to impart affection, to show there was no hostility.

“You want me to take your picture?”

She took his hand. “Yes. Very much. But not now. Not tonight, okay?”

“Okay.”

“I’ll do what I can for you, Andy, with Marengo and Boone and everything. I’ll try.”

“Katie, I …”

“Don’t say it. Good night, sailor.”
