Buchanan’s was packed on this late April lunch time, but Breda waved at them from a table by one of the windows; when Hazel led Maddy over she got to her feet, lifting her multi-coloured scarf clear of her orange boots, and embraced Hazel like a daughter.

‘I’m so pleased you could come at such short notice, love.’ She smiled at Maddy and held out her hand. ‘Hello, Miss Clifford. Grand to meet you.’ Her eyes touched, then slid discreetly away from, the scar beside Maddy’s eye. ‘Hazel’s told me so much about you.’ She eased her way back into her corner seat. ‘Sit down, both of you, I know time’s precious for all of us.’

Hazel picked up the menu and scanned it. ‘Not a patch on Thistle,’ she stage-whispered over the top of it, and Breda laughed.

‘Prices aren’t either,’ she pointed out. ‘Lunch is on me, so pick whatever you like best, and if they don’t have your favourites, pick a couple and combine them.’

‘Sorry, Haze, I don’t know if they’ll have squirty cheese and crisps,’ Maddy said, and earned herself a protesting glare from Hazel.

‘Did you know her really well?’ Maddy asked, hoping it just sounded like a polite question rather than a fishing expedition.

‘She was a friend of Donna’s first,’ Breda said. ‘Lumsden, that is. You remember she was the manager at Thistle, before me?’

Maddy nodded; it would be hard to forget Kilbride’s daughter. ‘I met her a few times.’

‘Linda was only a couple of years older than me, but maybe ten years older than Donna, so we got along a little better. Had more in common, you know?’

‘And Hazel?’ Maddy asked, looking from one to the other. ‘How long have you two known each other?’

‘Not long at all,’ Hazel said. ‘Breda was just really kind to me after Linda died, and we’ve agreed to try and cobble something together in lieu of a funeral. At least until we’re allowed to send her off properly.’

‘I know she’ll have colleagues and students who want to pay their respects,’ Breda added.

The waiter arrived to take their order, so Maddy took the opportunity of the brief lull in conversation to send a quick message to Paul.

In Inverness atm. Check Linda history with Kilbride – was friend of Donna. Maybe L father worked for Kilbride? Back by 4pm, will call.

Breda and Hazel were already discussing dates and venues by the time she’d sent the text, and she kept any further questions to herself for the time being, only taking mental notes as the two women spoke about their mutual friend. The way Breda had immediately embraced the spiky, outwardly intimidating younger woman as someone
