TWENTY-TWO
TELLING PORKIES
Ellis was sweating like a hog in the damn Porkieâs pig mascot suit. He could have done without it, but Wilde & Darque already had all of their casual operatives in place at every other outlet in the area. Undercover bakers in the twenty-four-hour back-of-shop bakery spaces, undercover giant Porkieâs pig mascots on the other shop floors. If everyone was on their mettle, then nothing sinister could creep through without them either eyeballing the suspect pie or the dicey person. The whole shebang was costing an arm and a leg which is why Ellis had originally agreed to leave Porkieâs Big Eatsâs usual security guy in place here, at their flagship shop. Now see where it had gotten him, wearing the damn suit himself, when the security guy had pulled a sickie and Billie had pulled a strop.
Luckily he had at least squared things up with Billie and had insisted on stepping into the sweat-suit himself. Heâd apologised for being a bit antsy after the run-in with the bleeding social worker from the funny acronym division, CAFCASS or whatever it was, but he could see that Billie must have been under pressure herself to have been so stroppy earlier. Heâd seen her giving short shrift in her time, to the odd rabble-rouser, and then some â he chuckled to himself as he mentally pictured some of those scenes â but never him.
No question about the fact sheâd been stressed, when he had spotted her running up the street for their rendezvous in the café, to sort out their beef and then spotted another whopping big wound on her head. God, how he had wanted to take her in his arms, brush away that amazing red hair flying behind her in the wind, and kiss her beautiful face better. Of course, he couldnât do that. Not right now, when she had already told him to bugger off once that day. He smiled at the thought. But maybe one day. Well, at least he could hope.
Heâd let her tell the whole sorry story about the kids and the clash with the lowlifes who had taken the older girl. Of course, sheâd had to go and report it to the cop shop. Teenager gone AWOL. He told Billie not to worry about not having gone straight over to Porkieâs to step into the suit, when she had finally stopped talking, that was, and let him get a word in. Sheâd refused his offer to run her to A and E, to check out her head. He didnât know why heâd even asked. No question she would agree to go that way.
Sickened him to the core that did, the kiddie hotel business, especially after what Maya had been through with a trafficking gang less than a year before. Thatâs why he didnât want Maya mixed up with the Freedom Angels place. That whole experience last year had changed her, Ellis was sure of it, though his girl had tried to keep up a brave face and had insisted on helping Boo set up the refugee centre.
