Sometimes, you’ll find it preferable not to drive too far from your home base. The journey around the western edges of Austin allows such a trek with a little history, an open road, and fun places to stop—all in a three- to four-hour drive from the heart of Austin.
Texas Highway 71 veers off U.S. Highway 290 west of Austin and heads northwest. The suburbs of Austin are visible for a short distance, but soon the city disappears into rolling hills. The road dips gently through limestone hills laced with cedar and oak trees. Waterways that drain the hills become visible as you approach the small community of Bee Cave.
