Chapter Thirty

“Ali…Ali…Ali…Ali.” Nate’s sister Audrey chanted when he walked down the staircase of his childhood home into the foyer that led to the kitchen. Dressed in a navy suit, with a cream blouse and heels, she looked like the capable attorney she was.

“Man, Ali don’t have shit on my big brother.” Hayden laughed, standing next to her in a dark suit, pink shirt and matching tie. “One punch and Vaughan was down for the count.”

“I hope you have an agent,” Audrey teased. “Hollywood is going to be calling. You looked good knocking your co-worker on his behind.”

“Ha ha. I'm glad you guys are having a good laugh out of this,” Nate said as he gave his brother a fist bump and a hug. “How you feeling, man?”

“I'm doing good Nate. Stop worrying about me.”

“I’m your big brother, I’m supposed to worry about you.”

“You don’t have to. I’m going back into the office today.”

“Already?” Nate questioned.

“Dad is hounding him to come back in. He claims we have too much work for him to be just sitting out for no reason.” Audrey added as she hugged Nate. “I saw you on the news last night. That Cahill woman was dragging you through the mud. She said you were suspended. Are you good?”

Nate could see the concern on his sister’s face. “I’m good. Really, I am.”

“It’s not often we get a call from our big brother at three in the morning.” Hayden said. “I rushed over to see for myself that you were here in your old room.”

“That freaked me out,” Audrey said. “What made you come here? Is there a problem at your house?”

“Now you need to stop worrying,” Nate stated. “With everything that’s happening Skylar suggested I take some time to hang out with the people who keep me grounded. For better or worse that’s you guys.”

“Let me make sure I’m hearing this right. You finally came home to concede I’m the better-looking brother.” Hayden laughed.

“Or have you come to realize I am the superior legal mind in this family?” Audrey taunted.

“I think Nate came to have a good home cooked breakfast,” Esther teased as they walked into the kitchen.

“Whatever the reason, I’ll take it,” Hayden said as he sat at the table that held platters of eggs, bacon, potatoes, and waffles. There were pitchers of orange, apple, and cranberry juice and a place setting for four.

“It is a wonderful sound to hear all of my children in the kitchen,” their mother, Charlotte, walked into the room. Charlotte was a good 5’6”, slim 140 pounds who wore the touch of gray at the temples of her hair like the queen she was.

“Hello my son.” She kissed Nate on the cheek. “How did you sleep last night?”

“I slept well, Mother.” He replied while holding the chair out for her.

“Why are you in jeans? Don’t you have to go to work today?”

“Oh, you didn’t see the news last night?” Audrey chuckled.

“No, watching the news is a waste of my time.” Charlotte replied as Esther placed a cup of tea in front of her.
