BRENDAN

It's funny. In all my thirty-five years in Toronto, I don't think I saw one sunrise. Well, other than from a drunken stupor or a walk of shame. Since Emmet and I renovated the Light Weavers’ suite as our bachelor pad, I bring my coffee out here and watch them all the time.

Did getting trapped here make me more contemplative? Or maybe it was coming back from the dead.

Whatever the reason, watching the golden orb warm the pink sky in the morning and cast a champagne hue over the city of Isilon is a regular part of my life now.

The city sprawls beneath me as I lean on the balcony’s stone railing. All the magic and mystery, with its secrets tucked between cobblestone streets and whispering through the verdant hills. It's all out there.

Somewhere out there is Nightfall.

During the days when we were hunting down the necromancer, I felt her with little effort. I was able to track her two or three different times without issue.

Not anymore.

The city breathes more magic every day. It's alive with the raw prana that courses through its veins, yet the spectral presence of the elven princess eludes me.

I rub the nape of my neck. Yesterday’s discovery of the Light Weavers was a game-changer.

The sisters hold an understanding of our enemy that none of us can equal.

They're also important to Emmet.

And Nightfall.

It's another reason I want to find her. She might not have said as much, but it's obvious that coming back as a ghost isolates her. If she knows the sisters are alive, it might be a way for her to reconnect.

"Come on, Brendan, focus." I set my coffee on the wide stone rail, close my eyes, and reach out with my senses.

I send out tendrils of energy, searching for the gentle buzz of her ghostly energy. There has always been a slight shift in the air that signals her presence.

Either it's gone, or I've lost my touch.

With a sigh, I pull out my phone and call up my sister's contact.

"Hello? Brenny? Are you all right?"

Her voice is thick with sleep, and it hits me that it's still really fucking early. "Sorry, Fi. I didn't mean to wake you. I got lost in thought and forgot how early it is."

"It's fine." She yawns. "What's up? What were you thinking about?"

"We can talk later when you're really awake."

She laughs. "Dude, the best part of my pregnancy leave is that I get naps—whenever I want one. Tell me what's up now, and I'll nap later."

I cave and tell Fi about being unable to connect with Nightfall and how I have a feeling something's not right. "Now that we’ve discovered the Light Weavers, I want to share that with her."

"But you can't find her."

"Right, and Fionn told me that if I have trouble with the Celtic shaman stuff, I should call on you. Since you fixed Emmet, I was hoping you have the Midas touch on all things broken brothers."

She chuckles. "I didn't fix Emmet. He just needed help fixing himself.
