Turned out Rufus wanted to kill two birds with one stone. Or, as I should phrase it, half a dozen birds with one stone.

“What color palette do you want for the living room? I’m assuming banana yellow isn’t your plan?”

I chuckled. “As much as I like that new addition to your living room, it’s not my plan. So instead of yellow, I’m thinking more dark and soft blues with cream accents.”

I could practically see his soul shriveling as he blinked a couple of times and then cleared his throat. “Whatever you want.”

“Babe, I’m not going to strip you of all your gothic sensibilities.”

He lifted one eyebrow, which made him look deliciously handsome. “You sure about that?”

“I promise that I’m sure. I’m going to keep the velvet, just make it a deep blue. Can you help me do this?”

“As you wish.”

For the next hour he coached my magic, helping guide and focus it so that by the end, we had the couches the color that I wanted them. It took a few tries going from banana to deep blue, but in the end we made it work.

“Great job,” he told me, beaming.

I smiled back, getting butterflies from looking at him. Rufus was so handsome, handsome on a level that made my knees liquify. His dark hair and eyes, along with his straight jawline and strong, lithe build made him physically gorgeous. But it was his attitude, his beautiful personality and kindness that made me love him. He was truly an amazing person who had come so far in life.

“Want to try a few knickknacks?”

I grinned. “How about we just go shopping for those?”

“I thought you’d never ask.”

Downtown was bustling by the time we made it through the streets and were heading to find some lunch. A new bistro had opened, and even though this was the South and people loved their barbecue, they also loved a good roast beef and au jus as well as other delectable treats.

I’d just ordered a roast beef sandwich and was heading with Rufus to a table when we ran into Shelby. Her gaze met mine immediately, and she whispered something to her fiancé before leaving him and coming over to us.

“How’re y’all doing?” she asked as I slid into a booth, Rufus doing the same thing across from me.

My gaze locked with his before I answered, “Fine. I don’t think we’ll be getting married at the Pines, though.”

She shivered and nodded. “Me, neither. Not after yesterday. We were supposed to be leaving for our honeymoon today, but we were able to postpone it. Have you heard from Reggie yet?”

I shook my head. “No.” Then I ventured a good old-fashioned, “It’s terrible about Cinnamon, don’t you think?”

She grimaced. “It’s…something, I’ll say.”

“She had a lot of enemies,” Rufus said in a voice to alleviate any of her worries that she couldn’t speak freely in front of us.

“I heard her accusing you of wanting to steal her fiancé,” I confessed. “Yesterday, in the hall.”

Shelby groaned and raked her fingers down her face.
