Chapter Thirteen

“You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby”

Kary had her famous tuna casserole ready for our supper. I say famous. Perhaps a better word would be “notorious.” But Camden and I would rather choke on it and die than hurt her feelings. Fortunately, there were plenty of Ellin’s delicious biscuits left over from a previous meal. The biscuits made an excellent stomach lining.

We sat down at the dining room table and I reached for the biscuits. “Okay, Kary, you’re going to enjoy this. Beverly didn’t show, and Delores expressed her displeasure by removing the wallpaper. Beverly now says I have to do something for Kit’s sister, Frieda, and the something is to get her into a band. I asked Vangie if the Slotted Spoons would take her in, and she said yes, if I got the Spoons a gig at the Cave. Dillon Pennix, owner of the Cave, will let them play tomorrow night if—and here’s the best part—if Camden will sneak into a rival club that caters to teens and take notes.”

Camden took up the story. “And I agreed to pass as a teenager if Randall takes me to Green Valley to see if I can find out why I look like a teenager.”

He didn’t mention his little episode in the car.

Kary laughed. “This would make a great fairy tale. In order to bring the queen to the castle to release her mother from the enchanted mirror, you must first find the prince a home, and then grant the princess her dream of singing with the fairies. But you must also find out if the spell of Eternal Youth is a gift or a curse.”

“Exactly. Only we don’t know when this tale ends, or if it ends happily.” I’d had more than enough fairy tales. “There better not be another knot in this string.”

Kary dug out another scoop of casserole for each of us and plopped it on our plates. “Cam, I didn’t think you wanted to go back to Green Valley.”

“I’m hoping someone there can answer my questions.”

“Couldn’t you call them?”

“No, I want to go there.”

I passed him the biscuits. “If I come back with more than one of him, head for the hills.”

“I’m not sure I want to know what that means,” Kary said. “What about Young’s picture? Did Bobbi’s BeautiQueen saleswoman recognize him?”

“No, but it’s still the best lead we’ve got. The only lead we’ve got, I should say.”

“We’re going back to Superior Homes, aren’t we? We still might find a clue.” She pushed back her chair. “I think there are more of those little oranges in the fridge. Want one?”

“Yes, thanks.” I waited until she was out of earshot before adding, “Anything to cut the taste.”

Camden looked at the pile of casserole on his plate. “You know, times like these, a dog would really come in handy.”

I passed him the biscuits. “Man up and chow down.”

He toyed with a clump of casserole. “Somebody should tell her how awful this is.”

“What’s wrong with you telling her?”

“She’s always so pleased with these things.
