Chapter Five

Four months pregnant

The chick stood at the door in four- or five-inch heels. Her black dress left nothing to the imagination yet still managed to suggest more. Her breasts, which must be fake, being she was hardly bigger than a stick, were almost but not quite as big as Andrea’s. Somehow Andrea did not feel like the victor in this comparison. The woman flicked long, chestnut hair with blond streaks over her shoulder and pinned Andrea with an expression of dislike.

“I happen to know Chase Covington lives here, and I want to speak with him now.”

Andrea tried to calm her frayed nerves and rubbed her belly. She wasn’t having the best of days with swollen ankles and no jobs for the last two weeks. The last thing she needed was to deal with one of Chase’s lovers. “And I know Chase doesn’t bring women to his home, so what do you want?”

“That’s for me to discuss with him!”

“What’s all the shouting?” Chase appeared behind Andrea and spotted the woman. His eyes widened. “Karen?”

Andrea made a rude noise and rolled her eyes at him. She started to walk away, but he caught her hand and drew her to his side. No amount of wiggling in the arm encircling her waist convinced him to let go. She glared at him and was ignored for her pains. His focus lay on the woman.

“What are you doing here, Karen? How did you get my address?”

Total transformation in attitude, Karen was all nasty seduction with pouty lips and whiny voice. The two didn’t match the way she came off in appearance, and Andrea cringed in disgust.

“Aw, don’t be like that, Chase. You said you would call.”

Chase’s face hardened. “No, actually I didn’t. I did date you longer than most, but that was it.”

Dates he calls them. Andrea admitted only to herself that she was jealous, but it wasn’t like they were together now. They hadn’t had sex since that first time, although it was obvious they had sexual tension going on.

“We were so good together.” Karen moved closer to him and reached out as if she would stroke his chest. He caught her hand, and to Andrea’s surprise, he pushed Karen back. The woman didn’t appear too happy.

“You and I were over months ago. What you don’t seem to notice is my girlfriend is pregnant.”

Karen’s jaw slackened, but so did Andrea’s. When had she become his girlfriend? The ho seemed not to have guessed why another woman would answer Chase’s door. Maybe because she was black, it didn’t enter Karen’s mind. Her startled gaze traveled Andrea’s length and settled on her rounded belly. Even at four months, she was pretty huge and hard to miss.

“She can’t be—” Karen began.

“I don’t know how you got my address, but lose it,” Chase interrupted.

Andrea winced. “Aren’t you being a little hard on her, Chase?”

He didn’t answer. “Leave.” Andrea could do nothing but watch while sweet Chase tugged her from the doorway and slammed it in Karen’s face. She blinked at him, confused.
