Chapter 8

Carina belted out a popular pop song, her cherry hair fiery from the red strobe light in the private karaoke room reserved by her friends and co-workers for her thirty-ninth birthday.

Kanesha poured champagne and politely smiled at the well-wishing from those close to her.

The day she was dreading was here and putting on a happy face was making her jaw hurt. She stretched her neck and took a sip of the champagne. The white synthetic leather of her bodycon mini dress stuck to her thighs.

“Alright, alright, alright. I think it’s my turn,” Cody said, stepping up to the stage and choosing a song to sing. Sounds of guitars and drums started, and Cody did an air guitar movement, while jumping in the air. Kanesha laughed. He looked ridiculous doing exaggerated air guitar in his work suit. He had removed his suit jacket and tie as the night progressed.

Singing the first lines of the song, he looked at her and winked. Kanesha recognized the song was The 1975’s Me & You Together. It was one of Cody’s favorite songs that he played repeatedly. She pretended to be a fan girl, hollering and fluttering her lashes at him, making him hoot with laughter.

“Cody still making a fool of himself, huh?” Yolanda said from behind her.

Kanesha pivoted to see Yolanda and Damien with their arms around each other. Yolanda’s loose dress still showed a rounded stomach though she had recently given birth to their daughter.

“You guys came? I’m so glad,” Kanesha said, giving them hugs.

“Of course, we wouldn’t miss your birthday. Though we can’t stay long. My parents are babysitting Zuri. And if I’m away from her for too long, I start leaking like a faucet,” Yolanda said, grimacing.

“Aw, I’ll have to come see your daughter soon,” Kanesha said, turning back to the stage to watch Cody, who stared at her with an intense hungry expression.

“Oh my gosh, you guys are fucking,” Yolanda whispered in her ear.

Kanesha swiveled her head toward Yolanda. “What! No. We are not.”

Yolanda gave her the I’m-no-fool look, arching one perfectly shaped eyebrow. “That’s a look of a man who’s seen you naked and would like to ravish you again.”

A flush crept up her cheeks, the heat enhanced by the flickering strobe lights in the room. She pulled Yolanda away from Damien toward a quiet space at the back of the room.

“I’ve known you since eighth grade, Kay. You can’t lie to me,” Yolanda said, crossing her arms, her legs spread apart in a don’t-mess-with-me manner.

“It’s complicated, okay?”

Yolanda gave an un-lady-like snort. “Yes, it is complicated. You are sleeping with a guy you’ve been in love with since college?”

Kanesha gasped, pushing her hair back from her face. “I’m not in love with Cody.”

Yolanda’s stance softened, her eyes flicking from Kanesha to Cody, who had finished his song and was strolling to the mini-bar area to get a drink. “You may be able to lie to yourself, but never to me. You’re in love with him. And sleeping with him—when you know his relationships never last longer than a month—will hurt you, Kay.
