hey! it’s Oliver

--

I never gave you my number…

Blair typed back.

--

After a few seconds, a reply came:

private eye, remember?

--

Blair rolled her eyes and was about to type back something snarky, when her phone died.

There, in the dark mirror of the dead phone, she saw something. A reflection of something. It appeared to be a small cheetah, in some sort of outfit—a tutu?

She knew exactly where she would find something like that.

BLAIR AND LIZ arrived in front of the mayor’s house in a puff of smoke at 7 p.m. sharp.

After Liz had been properly filled in, she’d insisted on being a part of the evening’s espionage—especially considering the art angle. The pair had debated taking Liz’s beat-up old hot rod, but figured the cafe truck would make for good advertising.

Of course, the event only had valet parking—something Blair usually avoided at all costs. She was left with the awkward task of turning over her keys to a frightened-looking yet polite attendant. He probably wasn’t used to driving anything like the Rolling Eye. Liz seemed to find the whole thing absolutely hilarious, and Blair couldn’t help but laugh along.

In their attempts to quell their tiny fit of laughter, Liz nearly collided with a rather large shrub that protruded into the walkway at a strange angle. It was then that they noticed that the hedges lining the walkway had all been cut into different shapes—or, rather, different animals. The effect was somehow both whimsical and ominous at the same time. Blair guessed that it had something to do with the sheer size of the creatures—the lion Liz ran into was at least ten feet tall.

They gave each other a wide-eyed look and continued in silence to the entrance.

The front door of the mansion was taller than a normal front door. A team of butlers greeted them, supplied them each with a feathered mask, a champagne glass filled with a purple, fizzing drink, and opened the large doors for them.

The masks went over the eyes, not really masking the face very much at all. Liz immediately put hers on, beaming. Blair stuck hers into her sweater pocket.

Blair felt that the event seemed more like some sort of fancy Cinderella-type ball than an art exhibit (though she’d never been to either, aside from a small gallery exhibit that Liz was a part of). She tugged at her sweater, feeling a bit underdressed. It turned out that she was.

The only ones not dressed in what Blair considered ‘red-carpet attire’ were the caterers, who were in animal costumes with human clothes over top. Bingo! Blair thought, looking around. Now to find that cheetah.

It seemed like half the town had arrived. Every available space was filled to the brim with rented tuxes and luxury cocktail dresses. Scattered in among the crowd were taxidermied animals, which were dressed in human clothes or otherwise wearing human accessories. The whole thing made Blair feel on the edge of claustrophobia.

She spotted Felicia eyeing a snake in a scarf, but there were too many people between them to say hello.
