A t the bottom of the stairway in the hidden farming valley of Kaern was a campfire with a large fire ring and wooden chairs surrounding it. On this night, the fire burnt bright into the sky as Margaret, Greyson, Henrik, Neya, Duke, Zeena, and the conjuror Atsu took seats around it.

“It was a splendid idea to meet here,” Margaret grinned as the night air was fresh and uncommonly warm.

“Agreed,” Zeena replied as she lifted her snout into the air and brought in a deep breath.

“It was Henrik’s idea,” Greyson seceded and gestured to him.

“Thank you, Greyson,” he replied. “I am glad you all agreed, as this is a place many of our farmers meet and sit to share a moment and a chat after long days in the fields behind us.”

“And their effort to bring the Creator’s bounty to all of us does not go unnoticed, Henrik,” Margaret replied. “And neither does yours, young man.”

“Thank you, Mother Margaret, but I just do my part,” Henrik replied, not keen on taking credit for his work.

“No. Thank you, Henrik,” Greyson added. “All of your efforts make Kaern a thriving home. You’ve earned the praise for your dedication.”

Henrik nodded with respect as Greyson acknowledged him and continued, “Now to business. I would first like to report to all of you that Carver and Edmon left recently to scout Kiraloth. As we are now under nightfall, so are they. Their only mission is to scout the walls and gain an estimated count of siege weapons, their placements upon the battlements, and any weaknesses in the fortress.”

Duke leaned forward, “How do you get a siege weapon upon a fortress battlement?”

“You build them upon it,” Henrik answered. “The Dominion has no shortage of labor to accomplish such a feat, many times over.”

“That is a frightening thought,” Zeena added.

“But we have an advantage,” Neya stated. “Trebuchets and ballistae are not made to traverse castle walls. Kiraloth has five main walls that we have observed. If we direct an attack at one or two, we take more than half of their siege defense out of the fight as they cannot range the weapons on the far walls and would fire blind.”

“That is why Carver and Edmon’s mission is so important,” Greyson added. “Their keen eyes will give us the best approach for assault.”

“I wish you would have considered my offer before sending them,” Duke replied. “I have many fine scouts that could have ensured their success.”

“No disrespect, Alpha, but these boys know this landscape and enemy very well,” Greyson countered. “They need to travel light and fast. Their familiarity with each other is their greatest asset. I did not wish to upset that by introducing your scouts to foreign terrain just yet.”

“Very well, Lord Greyson,” Duke nodded, respectfully.

“Carrying on, are there any other pressing issues that require a decision by our joint leadership?” Greyson asked, looking around at the group.

No one replied.

“Are the Dovians making themselves at home? Do your people have everything they need?” Greyson asked of Duke and Zeena.
