Chapter Twenty

Kylie

I’m tired by the end of the day. But I’m also invigorated. I have a new game plan and I love it. We’ve decided to do the pool on Sunday. Tonight is a chill night. Mom and Dad have the fire pit going out back. Lanie, Brixton, and Ash have just arrived. It’s a typical Moore Friday night complete with some Maryland crabs, which required a tutorial for our guests.

I watch as Ash climbs into Levi’s lap again to show him a secret room he found on his game.

Levi takes it in stride and the fact that he’s letting my nephew climb all over him is somehow making him even hotter.

I look away and decide to go inside. I need a moment without him. I’ve spent all day getting excited about every little touch of our legs under the table. My body is out of control with need for him and it’s wrong.

I’m putting some bags of marshmallows away when Lanie walks in and looks at me. “What’s going on? I know that look.” My eyes widen. Am I that obvious? Shit. I decide to cave. Lanie can keep a secret. I grab her arm and drag her into the dining room away from prying ears.

“Oh my God! I’m going to hell,” I quip as I shut the door from the kitchen behind me.

Lanie looks at me. “Let’s be fair, your road to hell was paved with the hair of every one of Di’s Barbies that you cut off and sprinkled around our playroom. That ship has sailed, my dear.”

I glare at her. “I’m being serious.”

She gives me her patented attorney pointed look.

I lean in and whisper, “I kissed Levi. Uh, well, sort of made out with him in the hospital.”

Her eyes widen. “What? Like when Vera was born?”

I nod and bite the inside of my cheek.

“Well, fuck me. OK. So, you like him?”

I nod again and shrug.

She raises an eyebrow.

“OK, fine. I like him a lot. He’s super cute and nice and smart. But Amelia has made it clear that until this feature story is over, he’s off-limits.”

“Is there some sort of contractual policy on that?” Lanie asks.

I shake my head. “No, she just said it would look bad and that would weigh on Pamela’s decision to keep me on staff or not.”

“I guess I can see that as an issue. But what if you just quietly pursued it. You don’t have to tell anyone. Like who would know, seriously? You are the Fort Knox of secret keepers.”

I blush. If only she knew about my big sex secret. I let out a breath. “I don’t know. I mean, taking it further is like a big decision, isn’t it?”

Lanie leans against the wall. “Kyles, listen to me. You are young and beautiful and smart. You have a finite time to throw caution to the wind and have fun. I mean, you’re considering sleeping with a billionaire CEO, not having a one-night stand with some stranger you met at a bar ten minutes ago.
