chapter fourteen.

“WHY ARE YOU walking so fast?” Sage asked Ruthie as they returned to class after a lunch spent sketching the Santa Ana Mountains.

“I’m not,” Ruthie huffed. But she was. Atom was strapped in a Baby Bjorn, bouncing against her chest as she tried to outpace her misery. Perhaps with enough speed, these uncomfortable feelings would separate from her body like boosters on a space shuttle. Perhaps they would just fall away.

“It’s because you’re mad at Owen, isn’t it?”

Ruthie stopped and told Sage to lower her voice. “How do—”

“Well, I’m mad at you.” This time it was Sage who sped up.

“Me? What did I do?” Ruthie asked, scampering behind her.

“You didn’t tell me about you and Owen.”

“What about us?” Ruthie asked. Was Sage referring to their first kiss, or Ruthie’s attempt to cover it up?

“One: You’re a thing. Two: He was with another girl at the mall yesterday. Three: I can’t believe I heard this from Ava G. and not you. Steppy, of all people!”

“Ava G. told you all of that?”

Sage held her phone in front of Ruthie’s face, inviting her to read her stepsister’s texts, sent at 11:17 a.m. that day.

STEPPY: FYI your friend with the bangs saw her boyfriend with another girl at the mall yesterday. They were kissing and sharing pretzel bites. Bangs was so mad she threw popcorn at him. Love her.
