The Hows and Whys : When you connect the battery to the aluminum foil, electrons come out of the negative end of the battery and travel through the aluminum foil and the wires in the light bulb until they reach the switch. When the switch is on (metal touching metal), the electrons will continue to travel back to the positive terminal of the battery. This path is called a complete circuit. When the switch is off (not touching), the electrons cannot travel through and the circuit is incomplete, so the light stays unlit.
