The late morning and early afternoon passed with the two women first sharing their modest breakfast, then going over Holly’s case files and then with June ordering in lunch for the pair of them. They worked, at first, in a strained silence, then with an easy banter as they found their stride. June felt her knees grow weak when she felt Holly’s hands linger on her’s as they swapped files or when Holly held her gaze, devouring June through her suit. She quickly realized that she turned into the bumbling, blushing bundle of nerves she had been when she first met Holly and this once bothersome feeling, thrilled her. She felt light and care-free again; as if nothing outside of the office existed.

“Blakely and Smalls, Holly Trudeau’s office.”

“Hey babe!”

The all too familiar voice sent an icy chill down June’s spine.

“Emma! Hey Hon!” June rubbed her neck then bit the inside of her cheek to stifle her disappointment.

“You sound exceptionally happy today! I told you a little morning delight would do you good...”

“Hey!!! None of that on the company line!”

“I know, I’m just glad to hear you so happy. I’ll behave - for now.” The hoarseness of her voice, let June know that Emma probably expected to have sex again tonight and though the idea of succumbing to Emma’s new found appetite was intriguing, June was not looking forward to what she was about to say next.

“Oh babe! I’m so glad you called. A really big case came in today - me and a few of the other girls are gonna have to pull an all nighter.”

“No June!” Her sigh felt like a hot wet blanket through the phone and June regretted the lie almost as soon as it came out of her mouth.

“I know babe, I know. I’ll have to make it up to you another time. I haven’t been in on one of these cases in a long while - usually I have one of the other girls fill in for me but I can’t this time. I’m sorry.”

“Alright, I guess I’ll just sleep over at my place tonight. And that reminds me - when are we gonna speak about moving in with each other? It’s such a hassle to keep two separate places when we’re always together anyway...”

“Emma, I told you I’m not ready to talk about that yet. It’s a big decision and I don’t want to make it lightly. I want to do what’s best for both of us, I don’t know exactly what that is right now.”

“Alright, alright! We’re gonna have to talk about this eventually though. I don’t see what the big deal is.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow babe.”

“Ok. I love you... See you-” CLICK! June hung up the phone before Emma made her say she loved her too. Which she did, maybe.

“You look upset - is everything okay?” Holly appeared from her office, pulling on her black blazer, attaché in hand.

“Yes. Everything is okay. Just some last minute ends to tie up.” June tried to play off her mild annoyance with Emma’s phone call.
