3. Fire-like Wind

Digesting food, generating heat, and opening the navel chakra,

Nourishing the body’s physical strength and

quickly igniting the heat of bliss,

Causing the attainment of the ultimate,

nondual body of emanation,

From my heart, I praise the fire-element wind.

The Fire-like Wind and the Navel Chakra: The next chakra location is the navel. This is where we connect with the fire-like wind. Fire-like lung has much to do with digestion, providing physical heat in the body and extracting nourishment from our food. When fire-like lung is not sufficient, we may not digest our food properly. But the principle of digestion covers a broad spectrum, from the gross to the subtle, from the fire that digests our food and provides nourishment to digesting the subtle veil of ignorance, resulting in the great bliss of the union of space and awareness.

Thoughts, emotions, and duality itself are all digested by the subtle heat of our awareness. These very thoughts block the positive qualities from fully emerging, so as these blockages release, the warmth of our awareness at the navel chakra ripens the positive qualities. As these positive qualities ripen, wisdom digests or dispels the darkness of ignorance; joy digests or dispels the heaviness of sadness; love digests or dispels the disruption of anger. Joy and love both have the quality of heat that digests our obscurations. Joy and love are important qualities in healing oneself. The heat of compassion burns self-centeredness and is essential in benefiting others. Joy and love and compassion are qualities that naturally arise from the union of space and awareness. In other words, when we have connected with a clear and open space within ourselves, when we recognize that space and allow it by giving it our attention, the seeds of love and joy and compassion are already present and will emerge when needed.

What blocks our positive qualities from emerging are our afflicting emotions of anger, greed, ignorance, jealousy, and pride, which often go unrecognized or are easily projected outward upon external objects and people. “That person makes me sick; I can’t believe he could do that!” “My family is so materialistic; I can’t stand to spend too much time with them.” We are all familiar with the term “unfinished business” in reference to unresolved conflicts and tensions between people. Another way to understand this is as an emotional conflict that has not been properly digested. With the fire-like tsa lung exercise, we use the heat of our subtle lung to digest our afflicting emotions. We are not using the conceptual mind to analyze our problems, but we are using the powerful tool of our nonconceptual awareness.

Let’s explore this a bit further. Reflect upon the relationships you have with people in your life. You may notice a relationship where there is a bit of stickiness. This can range from slight, barely noticeable discomfort to a more highly charged experience. Perhaps you experience this discomfort when you bring to mind an event or situation that occurred or is coming up in your life. This
