Chapter 12

Avryn’s explanations of the powers were not only intriguing, but essential for Janis. The one thing she had learned right off the bat when Macks was training her was that knowing the enemy, even the fine details, could mean the difference between a live assassin and a dead one. Listening to Avryn and Marric had caused her to rely on her sight for monitoring outside the cave, though the intense storm rendered her hearing almost useless anyway. As soon as Janis had spotted the lamplight and movement with it, her ears snapped back to the cave entrance and the flood gate of sound rushed in. The stark difference made the storm seem even louder. Now she stood, both hands occupied by her wicked daggers as she watched the people approaching.

At first, she thought that it could be a larger group, but it turned out to only be two people. The taller of the two was carrying a lamp that was miraculously still lit in the wet of the rain. It appeared that they had prepared this lantern for weathering conditions such as this. Glancing to the side, she saw that Harmel and Shrell were there at the entrance, weapons drawn and at the ready.

Though I appreciate their sentiment, they are more than likely going to be in my way! she thought in annoyance.

The two people were covered in clothes head to toe and it wasn’t easy to distinguish anything about them. At least, it wouldn’t be easy for someone who wasn’t Janis. She could tell by the gait of the two that the taller one was a man, one without much coordination at all, and that the other was a woman, far more controlled. They were together, not just in person, but romantically, for the man was slightly behind her and was softly pushing on her back.

Janis snickered at this, for the woman was far more capable of moving through the storm than the man, but he did this anyway. When they were close enough, she examined their bodies for any signs of weapons. She did spot a protrusion from the man’s cloak on his left side that looked like the handle of a blade, perhaps a short sword.

Before long, the two individuals stumbled to the opening of the cave. Janis bent down and prepared to pounce on them, when Harmel quickly shifted his sword in front of Janis, blocking her path. She turned and glared at him, frustration burning in her gut.

Just then, Shrell spoke.

“Who goes there?!”

The two figures froze and stumbled backwards a pace. Though their faces were covered in hoods, she could see them look back and forth, only now realizing that there were people in the cavern. Without hesitation, the taller one pulled back his cloak, revealing a man well past his middle age. His cheeks were starting to sink and his face was showing wrinkles, but his body indicated that he was much stronger than a man would normally be at his age.

“Oi—Oi’m sorry, sir.
