I return the next morning in a horse drawn carriage with a doctor and a team of nurses, but there’s not a single sound in the house. I burst through the doors, only to find the women I have grown so close to are gone. I try to focus, try to think, when a woman outside screams. I run towards the sound but I smell it before I see it, a trail of blood. I turn to shadow as I race away from the cottage, leaving the doctor and his menagerie behind. I can sense that the blood is Anna’s, for it does not smell like Carmen’s.

The trail ends at a shack in the middle of a field of wheat. I freeze, taking my normal form and crouching low to the ground. The wheat undulates like an ocean in the pale dawn. I hear a heartbeat coming from inside the shack, and I know it is Anna’s. She’s afraid, desperately afraid. I focus, trying to find any other small detail that will tell me if she’s alone, but I hear and see nothing.

Racing towards the shack, sure that my love is alone, I burst through the door, splinters flying everywhere. Anna is chained to the wall, tears streaming down her face and her night clothes torn and bloody.

I rush to my love, registering the chains binding her are silver and I cannot break them. She throws her arms around my neck and sobs. “I’m so sorry, Adam, I couldn't protect her…”

I kiss her, holding her close. “Who has done this? Who dared to put a hand on my woman!”

The pale morning is rewound as dark shadows form around me, my rage boiling out of control. Whoever did this will pay, their descendants will pay.

Suddenly, there’s a flash of silver and burning pain slices through my face. I stumble back, confused, raising my hand to my face and finding bright red blood. I can barely see out of my left eye, but I look up just in time to see Anna isn’t chained to anything, she’s only wearing a chain around her ankle.

And on the other end of the chain in her hand is a silver dagger as long as my forearm.

She looks at me in shock and fear, her hands trembling. But then her face tightens, hardens, and she lunges. The knife is aimed for my heart, but I catch her wrist.

“Let me kill you!” she sobs.

She’s not nearly strong enough to overpower me, but my strength falters at the words and the knife pricks my chest. As the blood wells beneath the knife, Anna screams, her hand trembling as if I’m stopping her, not getting any further. I release her, take two steps back in utter shock, and she falls to her knees, wailing and keening for forgiveness. I didn't know humans could make a sound like that, a bone chilling loss, and my heart breaks for her. It doesn't matter that she just tried to take my life, I love her.
