What does it look like inside?

Residential aged care consists of purpose-built buildings (facilities) also known as the ‘built environment’, in which are housed, usually, elderly people in need of 24-hour care.

The buildings are staffed by admin/management staff and care staff who can be nurses, AIN’s (assistants in nursing) or carers. There will also be support staff in the form of kitchen staff, cleaners and grounds staff. They can often be co-located with associated lifestyle accommodation or a ‘feeder’, such as a retirement village, helping to make any subsequent transition to aged care a small amble across the road.

The residents will present in various ways – walking, shuffling, sitting, talking, not talking, being talked to or with, being visited or not being visited, lying down, semi-reclining in oversized lounge chairs, laughing, crying, dying, ‘secured’, looking quizzical, bored, animated or being asleep.

Inside the buildings there are rooms where people ‘reside’. These rooms can vary from single rooms with ensuites to adjoining single rooms with a shared facility and sometimes, four bedrooms with shared facilities. Older ones can have both an institutional look and feel with standalone, bland brick buildings, or as Joan Rivers described them, ‘mind-numbing architectural sameness’. They are, usually, no more than two stories high with long, foreboding corridors and many doors. A hospital, they would appear, by any other name.

Enter, however, the modern age of aged care. In response to the sterile, clinical tone and the God’s waiting room theme, aged care providers have embarked on the innovative design and development of newer facilities that attract the eye and the hippocket. A hotel, they would appear, by any other name.

Some of these are addressed below.
