Cloverâs favourite restaurant was a simple affair. It was a white room with black and white photos of impressive buildings and bridges. There were black leather booths around the room, and wooden reclaimed floorboards that looked like they had been around hundreds of years. Although the décor was fairly basic, the food was incredible, the flavours of something as simple as steak so intense, just the thought of it made her mouth water.
âWhat did you mean before when you said you donât date?â Clover said. Theyâd placed their order and were snacking on nachos as they waited for it to come.
Angel smirked. âYou donât miss anything, do you? Iâm sure this is not going to put me in a good light but the women Iâve been with over the last few years have all been casual. We might go out for a drink but generally it just involves sex.â
Clover picked up a nacho and broke a chunk off. âSo you donât spend time talking or having fun with these women?â
He grinned. âWe have plenty of fun.â
Clover laughed. âI mean, being silly, apple bobbing, going to a fair, chatting for no other reason than just to get to know one another.â
âNo, thereâs not really much of that.â
âThen why are you doing that stuff with me?â
âBecause youâre my friend.â
âDo you not have any other female friends?â
âNo. I donât really have many friends at all. Iâve spent the last eight years travelling the world with Noah. Beyond him and my sisters, I donât have anyone.â
She chewed on her nacho thoughtfully. âSo youâve never had a long-term relationship?â
âNo.â
She stared at him as he scooped some guacamole onto his nacho. She understood that having a relationship would be tricky if Angel was moving around so much, but this felt like a choice more than anything else.
âWhy is that?â Clover asked.
Angel frowned but just then the steaks arrived.
She shouldnât have asked that. It was none of her business. They were friends and she had no interest in making it something more than that and clearly neither did he. They were having some fun and he was helping her out. But there was something a little sad about going through life alone and as his friend she wondered if she could help him out too.
Angel took a bite of his steak and moaned with appreciation. âGod, I can see why you wanted to come here so much, this is amazing. I definitely have stiff competition tonight.â
Clover tucked into her steak and decided to let him change the subject. At least for now.
They were silent for a while as they ate and then Angel spoke.
âMy mum died several years ago but sheâd had Alzheimerâs and dementia for a few years before that. She was so young and her memory deteriorated so quickly. She forgot most of what sheâd done with her life, which just broke my heart because sheâd had a full life and she simply had no recollection of it. She did remember her early life though, her late teens, she remembered that as vividly as if it had happened the day before.
