CHAPTER SIXTEEN

A mist of splinters and pastry crumbs caused by stray gunfire filled the diner, illuminated by Frau Carty's silenced weapon like a storm cloud full of lightning. Autumn groped her way toward Logan. He clutched the burlap sack like his infant, his mouth moving. She couldn't hear what he said. She grabbed him by the arm, and pushed him forward.

Ahead of Logan, Stella lumbered through the door. Behind Autumn, the driver grabbed his shoulder and screamed. A pink puff erupted from the same shoulder a second time, but he kept himself between the group and their assailant. Autumn felt a surge of admiration for the man's dedication to his boss's well-being and determined not to let him die as well.

Autumn forced Logan outside and unloaded a barrage of fire at Carty as she returned for the driver. He had collapsed under a table when she found him.

She grabbed his collar. "How bad is it?"

The driver struggled to his knees. "I can't move my arm."

Autumn fired more rounds through the debris cloud without aiming at any particular target. "Are your legs working?"

He pushed himself to a squat with his other arm and nodded.

"Go!" Autumn sprang up and emptied the rest of her ammunition toward the kitchen, moving close behind the driver through the door.

The run to the limo was short. The driver fumbled in his pocket for the keys. Logan shielded Stella behind him as they sought cover behind the vehicle.

Indistinct shouting came from the other side of the building, moving onto the patio. Shots plinked off of the limo as Autumn skidded across the gravel parking lot to join the others behind the car. She reloaded and fired at the flashes appearing from the other end of the patio. She pulled a door handle. The limo was still locked.

Autumn turned to the driver. "What the hell are you waiting for?"

The driver slumped against the car with an outstretched fist toward Autumn.

"Dammit." She pried the keys from his bloody hand and tossed them to Logan.

More shots impacted the limo. She returned fire. "Get in and drive."

She steadied herself and fired a single shot between rails of the deck. One of the attackers fell to the ground, unmoving. The other ducked behind the building, but quickly popped out to keep shooting.

The sound of breaking glass interrupted the stream of incoming rounds. Autumn looked toward the diner. A roaring fire licked through blown out windows from the dining area.

"What the hell?" A sudden ballistic impact on the windshield reminded her to get into the limo.

A pickup truck driven by the remaining attacker, Frau Carty beside him, erupted from behind the burning diner.

"Logan, what are you waiting for?"

He waved the keyring at the steering column, exasperated. "I can't see where to put the key."

"Damn, dude!" Autumn snatched the keyring from Logan. A quick inspection indicated a fob for a keyless ignition system. "Foot on the brake."

Logan complied as she pressed the starter button and the limo engine roared to life. "Freakin drive, already!"

He looked sheepish as he thrust the vehicle into forward momentum.
