THE NOTES ALL THREATENED Luke’s life and raised an important question in Julia’s mind. Why?

Why would someone want to kill him? Why hadn’t he turned them over to the police after the shooting? “Why didn’t—”

Her cell phone vibrated. “Garcia.”

“Where are you?” Rachel demanded.

“Getting clothes for Luke.”

“You need to come to the office. Now.”

“Is it Sonya?”

“No. It’s you.”

That didn’t sound good. Placing the letters on the end of the bed, she opened the correct drawer and grabbed a pair of jeans and a T-shirt for Luke. Pressing her lips together, she weighed her options. It wasn’t a tough decision, so she grabbed up the envelopes and hurriedly left the boat.

She didn’t stop at the dock master’s office to return the keys. At this point, she didn’t know how, where or when she’d be returning the threatening letters. Only that it wouldn’t happen until she figured out why someone was intent on killing Luke.

Rachel and the entire team were assembled in the conference room. Julia felt all eyes turn in her direction when she entered.

Rachel was at the head of the table. Seated next to her was Sophie Brooks. Sophie was a tall, willowy blonde who fronted as the invitation designer for Weddings Your Way. She was former CIA, leaving New York City in order to work for Miami Confidential. She was pretty secretive about her past, so Julia knew only two things about the woman: 1) she avoided men and 2) she refused to give up her love for panty hose, even in a city as hot as Miami.

Rafe Montoya was in the next seat. Of all the Miami Confidential agents, Julia was probably closest to him. They shared similar pasts. Rafe came from humble Latin roots and he’d done time as a DEA agent.

Clare Myers sat opposite him. She was a tiny woman who’d traded in her job as an IRS auditor to work as Miami Confidential’s accountant. She was a math whiz and could follow a paper trail better than anyone Julia knew.

Nicole O’Shae was next to Clare. They were on opposite ends of the style spectrum. Nicole was the Weddings Your Way photographer and had an eye for detail. Her grasp of visual minutia was amazing. She wore her jet-black hair in pigtails and sported some kind of yin-yang tattoo on the back of her neck. She had at least a dozen piercings and a passion for vintage gothic clothing.

Samantha Peters was the thin, quiet one. Julia always felt a little uncomfortable around Samantha. Not because she wasn’t friendly; she was. It had to do with Samantha’s past. She’d spent years as an FBI profiler, so Julia always felt as if she had to measure every word she spoke around her. Though Samantha had softened a little. A lot, actually. Thanks to Alex Graham. The two had met when his sister was hit by the limo that kid-napped Sonya. The sister had recovered, but Samantha was never the same since falling in love.

Isabelle Rush, the strawberry blonde with the light brown eyes, sat sipping some juice.
