WHY DOES MY CHILD EXHIBIT CHALLENGING BEHAVIOR?

There are many reasons why children with autism exhibit challenging behaviors. Like all children, they sometimes have “bad days.” Sleep deprivation, disruptions to their routine, difficult academic assignments, and other unpleasant events can trigger challenging behavior episodes. Because children with autism often have limited communication skills, they also may learn to use a challenging behavior to produce a desired outcome. For example, if your child is given a difficult task that he or she does not understand, he or she may pinch, hit, or scream to escape from it. FBA is the process for identifying these types of situations that produce challenging behavior. When the educational team understands what they are, the team can design a BIP to reduce or eliminate them. Three categories of variables control challenging behavior: setting events, antecedents, and consequences.
