“What are you building?” I asked my two little brothers as I walked into the barn out on my mom’s property.

“Hi, Ass,” Spruce greeted me from his spot on the floor. He and my other siblings occasionally used Willow’s nickname for me, much to my chagrin.

“Hello, Atlas,” Terran, my youngest brother, greeted me from the other side of the contraption he and Spruce had set up on sawhorses. “We’re making a machine that will collect the eggs from the chickens so that all we have to do is swap out the empty container for the full one.”

“Got bit again, huh?”

“She almost took off my thumbnail, Atlas.” Terran held his hand out so I could see the bandage wrapped around his thumb. “Mom said it may fall off on its own.”

“That’s a catastrophe.” I was trying not to laugh, imagining the drama that injury had caused.

My mom had four children with my stepdad before he died. Spruce was the oldest at almost 13, followed closely by our sister Jewel who was almost 12. Terran was the third child at eight years old, and our youngest sibling Petra was about to turn seven.

Those were there numerical ages. They all seemed like they were in their late 40s.

My mom’s second husband had been an engineer. The man was a genius and passed that on to his children.

All four of them were highly intelligent and quirky as hell, and damn, they were fun to be around. For a long time, my mom had homeschooled all four kids, but the oldest two had decided to go to public school last year. Terran and Petra still studied at home with Mom, and Grunt was here to add his unique input now.

Terran had been in a car accident with his father and suffered from seizures for years, but luckily they stopped after doctors had repaired a bleed in his brain last year. Since his health had improved, he was more outgoing even though he still liked to spend time alone reading and studying things that caught his attention.

“Our paperwork came in today,” Spruce told me with a grin.

“You’re officially a Parker?”

“Yep, G-Dad is legally Dad now. We’ve even got the same name. You should see if he’ll adopt you so you can be a Parker like us,” Spruce said seriously.

“I don’t think it works like that for adults, buddy.”

“Summer’s a Forrester, Willow’s a Hamilton, and we’re all Parkers now. You’re all alone,” Terran said as he walked around the contraption so that he could look at it from a different angle. “Or you should get married so there’s more of you.”

“That’s not really a good reason to get married, T.” I laughed as I shook my head. For all their genius, they were definitely still kids. “I did meet a girl though, and I wanted to talk to you about her brother.”

“Is he our age?” Terran asked excitedly.

“Nope. He’s an adult, he’s just a little different than most. He’s smart like you guys, and he lives in the apartment behind my house.
