I’m not one for taking vacation. It’s not that I’m a workaholic or don’t have a life, but my schedule tends to work out so I have two or three days off at a time anyway. I prefer to save those days in case there’s an emergency or I want to take a long trip somewhere, so my bosses usually have to badger me into using up my time.

Today, that pays off. Both of my bosses ask me to come in tomorrow since it’s such short notice, and after that, they’ll make sure my shifts are covered for a few days. I feel bad for holding Max up for an extra day—or a little more, considering we won’t leave until the following afternoon—but he insists it’s fine. After all, it gives him a chance to follow up on some of the leads his friend found for him.

In fact, by the time I come home the next night, Max has two interviews lined up in Los Angeles. They’re not quite what he was hoping for—not that I understand the ins and outs of his industry—but they’re steady paychecks. Little by little, things are looking up for him, and I hope it continues like this. He deserves better.

It’s mid-afternoon on Friday when I’m finally awake, caffeinated, and ready to roll. Max is still kind of bleary-eyed too; his sleep pattern’s all kinds of fucked-up, and spending the wee hours of the morning having sex with me probably doesn’t help. He’s not complaining, though. Neither am I.

Before I know it, Las Vegas is a dusty blur in the rearview, and we’re out in the open desert.

“You want me to drive for a while,” he says, “just say so.”

“I’ll let you know. It’s not that long of a drive, though.”

“It’s four and a half hours.”

“I know. But I used to drive all the way to Denver from here without stopping except to get gas.” I shrug. “I can handle this.”

“What was in Denver?”

I suddenly regret mentioning the city. Eyes fixed on the stretch of interstate in front of me, I say, “My ex.”

“Oh. I… Sorry. I didn’t mean to pry.”

“Eh, it’s okay. It was a long time ago.” I fidget in the driver’s seat. “Almost four years, now that I think about it.”

“How long were you together?”

“Two. He was a dental student when I met him. There’s a dental school in Vegas that’s one of the best in the country or something. I guess. Anyway, he was a few months away from graduating when we met, and we decided to do the long distance thing after he moved to Denver.”

Max says nothing, but the question is buzzing in the air.

“He…changed his mind when he figured out it would hurt his chances of establishing a respectable practice if people found out about me.”

“What?” Max makes an exasperated noise. “Denver’s pretty progressive. I can’t imagine people would be that weirded out over a gay dentist.”

“A gay—” I glance at him. “No, it wasn’t because he’s gay. It was because I’m a stripper.
